tips needed - Rear end squeak
Hi Fellow Z Nuts,
I've had a hunt through the forums but can't find anything describing my symptoms so I thought I'd ask for any experiences people have had..
76 260z 2+2 (aussie so yes it's a 76 260z)
Diff is an R180 with 240z internals
EDIT : Suspension is KONI shocks/struts but not particularly lowered or anything
I have had some issues with quite loud "squeaking" noises coming from the rear end of the car. It seems to directly correlate with wheel movement but ONLY on acceleration... cruising or using engine braking is quiet.
Accelerating from a stop, it sounds like a slow creaking noise which increases in pitch to a fairly constant (and annoying) squeak/squeal.
If I drive at 100kph for about 5 mins, the squeak stops for the rest of the drive (heat?).
I do get a bit of clunking on shifts and believe I may need to replace the front differential mount soon, but at the same time I would like to avoid pulling the entire rear end out if this is a simple fix or "regrease this part" type problem.
I currently suspect the following :
- rear wheel bearings are worn or out of grease.. OR
- half shaft joins are out of grease and wearing.. OR
- half shaft uni joints are cactus.. OR
- drums are shot or out of adjustment..(but brakes and handbrake work fine) OR
- broken diff mount may have put everything out of alignment and something is rubbing on the diff or at the wheel end of the half shaft.
If anyone has had similar symptoms, could you let me know what the ultimate issue was? This might save me doing some work which isn't required. I have a hayes manual and can do anything needed but if I can turn a full weekend's work into 3 or 4 hours then I'd be very happy.
(is there a way to replace the front diff mount without removing the diff?)
Thanks for any help peeps..
