Brake Convertion Kit

I'm wanting to convert my 240Z to rear disc brakes. Looking for any info on where to look and what kits out there may be better than others. Any help would be appreciated.

You can contact MSA at www.zcarparts.com. Their kit is very pricey. Also check your private messages.

280zx rear breaks. They only fit if you swap sides of car.

Thumbs up Rear Brake Kit

Go to Modern Motor Sport - http://www.modern-motorsports.com/catalog/default.php and select the rear disk package.

Cool disc brake conversion (rear)

You can use either the 280ZX combo or the motorsport z package. My info here is on the 280ZX package. I am now using it on my 71 240Z along with the 300ZX rotor/toyota calibers on the front. First, you have to remove the rear brakes and the backing plates (cutting it into two parts for removal) that attachs to the stub axel housing. After that, you have to make the mounting plate for the conversion. There are several drawing out there on how to make the plate. I can also send you one. If you don't make it with the split in it (for placing it on the stub axels without taking off the stub axels), you have to remove the stub axels so that you can put on the plates (good time to replace the old bearings). I have made a three hole plate and trying it out now. If it works, you will not have to remove the stub axels. Just have to remove the backing plate (you have to cut it off) to make it work. You then have to find a good set of early (79 to 81) calibers and a good set of later model (small hat) solid rotors. Place the rotors over the studs and mount the calibers on top of the rotors. As you bolt them down you may have to adjust with spacers (washers) to center the calibers. Make sure you have the bleeders to the top on both sides. Mounting plate will go to the front. It will not mount to the rear because of the struts. Bleed the brakes well. Make sure all of the bolts are tightened to spec's. I have had this combo on the car since the early 90's and it still does not leak. I will say that I do not have the brake cable hooked up (track car only) and it may be the cause of it not leaking. A lot of people do not like this combo. But most of the GT-2 racers that I know have used this combo and liked it. I am now looking at the 300ZX T rotors and calibers (?) for both the front and rear. May use this combo on the next Z I do. It will be up to you to pick the one you want. The other package is a good brake package, it is just to costly for me. But if cost is not a problem look at the Arizona Z site for a great package (cost a lot of money) for you. Good Luck, Rich.

I am trying to convert my 1972 Datsun 240Z to rear disc brakes and to upgrade the front brakes. I did a lot of searching on the Internet and came up with the setup below:

- 79-81 280ZX Brake Master Cylinder 15/16

- 89-98 240SX calipers and hangers

- 84-85 300ZX rear rotors 4x4 1/2 lug pattern

- 1989-1995 Toyota 4WD Pickup Front 4-piston calipers

- 84-85 300ZX front rotors 4x4 1/2 lug pattern

My main question is what bracket do I need for the rear brake setup and do I need any spacers or adapters on the front for this setup. I want to keep with the 300ZX rotors all the way around since I can get them as a set cross drilled/slotted, etc. I am not sure if I could use the Nissan Part number 44155-04S10 (Maxima August 1988 - 1994) adapter bracket or if I would need a custom offset bracket for my application. I suppose I would be open to other calipers for the rear but I would like the larger calipers other than the 280ZX caliper/rotor setup that I have heard works with this Nissan Part number 44155-04S10 http://www.courtesyparts.com/betasit...-p-361222.html.

There is this bracket drawing available to construct your own bracket http://240z.jeromio.com/images/RearDiscBracketSized.JPG

I am just not sure about the offset, etc. using this.

Please let me know what information you might have or if you can't help maybe you can refer me to someone that can enlighten me.

You don't really need the larger master. I think the 85 Z was 5 lug. The larger S13 calipers won't clear a 14" wheel. You will have to trim the backing plates a little in front. You will need a spacer for the rotors in front, I don't think you can buy them but I have a drawing if you want to have some made. You will need an adjustible proportioning valve (MSA). Don't know about the rears cause I used 280zx calipers with early Maxima brackets. The increased braking is well worth the work.

Cool brake conversion info

As per your message (cgraner). You need to remove the brake bias device at the rear of the car. It is above the rear axle on the passenger side just before the t-intersection in the brake line. You need to remove it and either replace it with a adjustable brake bais system or move the line over and reattach it. I did the reattach the part with my 280ZX rear setup. You may want to look into the adjusting system to fine tune the brakes to you. Also on the front 300ZX brake setup and the S-12W Toyota calibers, you will need the 1/2" spacer that goes between the rotor and hub. Other then that you can make your own mounting plates (rear brakes) or buy them (several sites sell it). Check out HybridZ.org for more info on your choice of brakes. They have a lot of info on that setup. Don't know what part of the country you are from. But you will need at least 15" wheels to fit over the brakes. If you where near NC, I have a set I could sell to you.

Cool brake additional info

The rear brake calibers will only go to the front side of the rear strut and goes with the bleeders to the top of the calibers (goes on the different sides, left to right, right to left ). Mounting plate mount the same way (mounting holes for calibers to the front). If you bend the hard line to the caliber (to fit) bend it with a lot of care (Do not kink the line). Other, then that bleed the system a couple of times to get the air out of the lines. If you remove the shafts to remove the backing plates. This would be a good time to replace the seals and bearings before putting the mounting plates on and then the putting the shafts back in. Good Luck, Rich.
