BMC swapping?
My master cylinder for my brakes is on it's last legs. Tired of pumping to stop the car.
Can you swap the master cylinder and booster from other z cars without fabbing? Other Nissans? I wouldn't mind a bit of an upgrade. I tried doing some searches, but didn't find anything. A larger capacity master might not be bad. I don't know why when I looked into brake upgrade threads, I didn't see it mentioned. Maybe I am just blind and looked it over? |
A (79-81) 280zx master is a good S30 upgrade.
|
Nice.. Booster any better? They looked like they were the same size, but it's hard to tell.
|
I think the boosters are virtually the same.
Hybridz has a killer write-up: http://forums.hybridz.org/showthread.php?t=103767 |
Sweet.
Now I just need the money. haha |
you could always get these and never have to worry about a booster ever again...

Hmm.... Those are nice.
|
and are fairly cheap.

If I had the time, and a garage, I would. But... Till then I would like to just keep the car going.
There will be some major mods when I have the place to do them. I haven't touched a welder to the car except for the exhaust. It's hard not going out and cutting the car up and starting from scratch. haha |
I'm trying to figure out how to post here, so help me out, if I don't do it right.
Here goes; the 280zx booster swap is limited by the welded throttle pivot bracket. I'm investigating the booster out of a 1986 nissan 720 p/u |
yeah that worked just fine
|
thanks
I gotta leave work right now butI will try later.
I do have some info on transmission changes that I did not see in the tech location. will try to navigate the forum to note those. |
Worked great. Thanks for the insight. Are you saying that if I swap the 280ZX booster in that it would interfere with the factory 260Z throttle bracket?
|
booster swap
You won't believe this but... i happened to have a loose 81 280zx booster and master. And oddly I have 74 260 awaiting further dis-assembly. I grabbed the booser and it fit perfectly. Direct swap.
I have taken no less than 25 z's apart and never had this combination handy. I do know the 240 z throttle bracket is in the way of the booster upgrade. Amazing!!!:023: |
Nice. So would you say that the booster is an upgrade for the 260?
|
FWIW, on my '78 I used a 79-81 BMC and booster along with the Modern Motorsports upgrades (vented 4 piston up front, disc conversion with 240 SX calipers in back). I originally tried to reuse my old booster, but it turned out to be as corroded and bad as the original BMC. It all fit fine, though. It has worked nicely all this year, mostly just twisty mountain/canyon fun drives. I remember searching on here and some of the other boards, and a lot of combos seemed to work. The one universal warning was to be careful about reaction disc and pushrod alignment and adjustment, or you get odd vacuum behavior, spongy brakes, and more. New parts with careful assembly did fine for me.
cheers, Dave |
Yes, the booster is a direct swap upgrade to the booster/master. It does have a larger diameter diaphragm and I am assuming it applies more vacuum assist to the system. The one I tested, a 1980 280zx 2+2 is from a heavier car than yours.
BoulderZ had good points. I have not looked at the actuator rod lengths side by side. Clutch slave cyl / rod/ throwout bearing fork pivot stud/ these are a nightmare if you mix and match The point is; heed the wise advice to check old part lineup with new part lineup side by side. |
Bump on this (yes... I know... old thread...).
Has anyone tried to match up an 82-83 S130 brake booster & master to an S30? The 82-83 has a 90* clocked master, but if the booster mounts the same to the firewall as the 79-81, the master being clocked wrong wouldn't matter. I will pull them both this weekend to see if it will work, but does anyone have any insight? |

FYI... This is an easy upgrade. The S130 280zx brake booster & master swap right in to the S30. The only thing you have to do is:
-Remove the spacer on the back of the 280zx booster. -Adjust the brake pedal link to match the 280z booster. -Rotate the 280zx booster 180 degrees & install. Bam! Attachment 20089 Attachment 20090 Attachment 20091 |
Hi,
I'd like to know, do the 240Z and 280Z boosters have the same thread patterns? or does it need to re-drill new holes on the firewall to fit a 280 unit on a 240Z body? on your photo, the threads between the 280Z and 280ZX units seem to be at the same spot, so I'm guessing it needs to re-drill? if anyone can confirm that to me.. thanks! |
The distance between the booster studs are the same for all 240z-280zx's. As stated in my previous post, when using an S130 booster in an S30, you just need to clock it 180* (turn it upside down) and do not use the spacer.
No re-drilling, no other modifying... just install it. :) |
thx for the reply
are you a 100% sure though? 'cause I've read a few topics stating drilling was needed on 240Z bodys, like this guy (maybe he didnt turn it 180°? ) http://www.classiczcars.com/forums/w...-can-done.html you wouldn't have measured the distance between the studs before installing it on your car, by any chance? |
