Headliner

Any good tips on how to put a new headliner into a '76? I've got the liner from MSA, but after doing a dry run and wrestling with it for 45 minutes without the adhesive, I can't figure out how to put it up while the glue is busy drying.

Ideas?

did you put the cardboard part down then lay fabric over it? Its one of those things where you do a portion at a time.

headliner

Thanks for the thought; the MSA instructions were very good about telling me how to take the board out, glue the liner on, and put it back. Unfortunately the '76 didn't have the board in the ceiling. My headliner goes straight against the metal.

I'm going to give it a try in a few minutes. If you don't hear from me again you'll know I've stuck myself to the roof. :-(

I have done a couple of these

It helps to have someone help you out, Four hands is about the minimum for a decent install.

Spray both the headliner and roof with adhesive and let them tack up.
Then start at the middle front and tuck the headliner in the groove between the upper winshield frame and the roof panel. Once the front is held in place I smooth the center down leading to the back of the car. This leaves both sides hanging. Tuck in the back, then pick a side to start on. Smooth out from the center to the edges and tuck in when you reach the outer roof.

This is kind of hard to explain in words but hopefully it makes logical sense.

I got a nice headliner at the pick n pull for $7.50. I'm going to try dissolving the old foam back with acetone. Then glue it to some of that new insulation with the foil on both sides. I'll use the old one to try it first. Maybe I should glue the foil to the roof first?

Thanks for the tips

So, I went ahead and tried it. Didn't work too well. The main problem was that the adhesive set up too quickly. Once you stuck it up there, it really tried to stay stuck - couldn't get the end bits up under the ledges without them trying to fold, and some of it bunched up in the passenger rear corner.

It's up but kind of ripply, so I've decided for now to go with the "texturized" look. Later I'll pull it out and take it to a guy I know who'll charge me $50 BUT do it right.
