suggestion to up Zdriver traffic
so i was looking through the homepage and it shows we currently have 70 guests right now viewing and twelve active members online total of 82 users. the HIGHEST EVER recorded number was 2028 users, that was on 9/3/08!!! that means we have ALOT of lurkers. so maybe along with nismo's site announcement we should put something more inviting along the lines of "due to slower traffic we encourage any site visitors that are or perspective Z owners questions or not to join our community and post an introduction thread in the off-topic setion, pictures very welcome"
because as we all know we get 10 names on here that regularly post but it seems pretty obvious we still have ALOT of people coming by and visiting and i sure could got for a zdriver second coming where there was 3 pages of updated threads to go through after not being online for 12 hours

It's possible that if this site focused more on being a Z site instead of Snowy's site, it might attract a little more attention too.
I vote to create a Snowy section, and everything that is non-Z related can only go in there.

^^^ Ouch!
Good suggestions, unfortunately Snw, a lot of those "guests" are bots, spammers, and crawlers. Check out the "who's online" feature & you will see many spiders & crawlers. Those are search engines collecting data for people searching the intrawebs.
Indeed we can work on an announcement like that though.

I have an idea.
Every time someone asks a question about a 30+ year old vehicle, why tell them to just search for the answer? Sure you could find answers after searching. I could do that without even coming here to the forum too. It's also much easier to search when you know the terms used in the old threads discussing what is in question. When you are new, you may not know what, or how to search for something as easy as when you are used to the site.
My suggestion is to go easy on people. Sure, give them a link to an old thread. But, don't make them feel like crap for asking the question in the first place.
I have a rough time finding out what I want to know through searches still.
Is it really hard to answer a qestion more than once?
If you have the time, just help them out.
If you don't ever ask qeustion, you will have a pretty dead forum.
I know the less mechanically inclined, or those not familiar with the cars have a hard time even knowing what to ask. Not everyone even know's the basic Z stuff.
That's all for me.
Love this place, and would like to see it grow. Anything to help a healthy Z population.

not to many times do we just say search. nismo or i cause i have this complex to isnert input and then we include if its a widely discussed topic to try the search function we point out its existence.

That's what I am saying. If it's been discussed to the point of beating the dead horse, then point to a link and remind them of the search function. I just don't want it to become habit to tell someone to search for simple answers. Or if they have to dig up an old thread, and read through pages before coming to to answer they were looking for.
Not saying not to use the search, or tell people about it. But there have been a few time where it was not so polite.
I am not naming any one person. I know I have done it before. It's sad to see the first and last post for a person that otherwise could have been another posting member.
I was throwing this up as a reminder for us ALL to be nice and helpful to the newbs. Make them see why they want to come back to the forum for help. Knowing that someone is there as more than a random person on the internet, but a fellow enthusiest. A person that is not only full of information, but willing to give it out any chance they can to make someones life easier. That's the point of an online community like this in the first place.

i do agree with ratfink a good bit. i have seen a few times, not every time, that someone asks a common question, it has been laughed at and discouraged by almost everybody that did post in the thread, including me. i do believe we've had the same discussion with a new poster a few months back. i could surely support an effort to five pretty thorough answers to newcommers, before they are directed to the search function. perhaps by the time that they are comfortable enough to be answering other threads, they should be suggested to use the search. if it wouldn't help, it surely wouldn't hurt.

i like that suggestion, if it counts for anything. some of the more commonly asked questions would be well suited in stickies at the tops of the forums. like, the first things to check when your car won't start (this has been asked in each section i'm sure. those threads could be posted as stickies right up at the top, where the "how to make the N/A faster" is)
