Wanted: LSD

You guys know the one 04/87-88 if its the ss I need the half shafts too. Any leads would be great. I have been watching ebay, craigslist, and keeping on the scrap yards with no luck. please let me know if anyone hears of one for sale. Thanks guys!:082:

and 89 no? anyways. its expensive and hard to find one of these from another person, best bet is to find one on your own in a J-yard and such. or... these are robust rear ends... go get a LSD and install like power brute, its affordable and from what i've read very gripy. locks good. or drop the money on a lifetime warranty one quaffe? quaiffe? right? idk i probably spelled that wrong wrong wrong

-S13/S14/Z32 complete rear end suspension swap = ? - $3000

I bought my Z31T LSD on ebay for $640... that was about 5 years ago. They're hotter now...

There was one on ebay last week buy it now $999. :103:
S13 swap is more than I want to get into mentally or physically. Athough I could do the subaru swap and have the half shafts re-worked. Decisions, decisions. I'll probally just have to be patient.

snwbrderphat540 12-06-2008 04:44 PM

the subaru swap always intrigued me.... is it really that straight forward of a swap? just gotta get the half shafts screwed with? then i also gotta wonder how strong it is and how cheap/easily you can get those for

and teh power brute is 600? did it go up in cost over the years? i coulda swore a couple years ago they were only like 450. or was that the group buy price on hybrid

NismoPick 12-06-2008 05:05 PM

The Subie 160 diff is for the 510 / 1600 / 2000 roadsters... not the Z.

Yeah... I remember the Powerbrute being $450-$500 a couple years ago, but I read somewhere that it's about $600 now. And their website doesn't list prices. Oh... and add $200 for a shop to install the diff / gear into the pumpkin.

I personally think the S13 / S14 rear end swap is overkill. There's no real reason to do it, other than having lots of spare time, and the crazy desire to fab your own suspension. Check this crazy guy:

I have a KAAZ 1.5-way in my ZXT. I got it (slightly) used off ebay for ~$550. It was out of a 240sx, and I had to trim one of my CV axles to get it to fit...

You can get them for around $1000, and they say they're pretty badass!

260zturbo 12-06-2008 06:28 PM

i say do the Quaife. Lifetime warranty. might cost 3k in the end to have it in your car but well worth it plus you get to pick what gear ratio you want to put it in.

straight hate 12-06-2008 06:33 PM

That Quaife is expensive!!! Wait, the wife just volunteered to sell her Altima so I can get my LSD, the skys the limit now boys!

260zturbo 12-06-2008 09:52 PM

lol, im sure a lsd will lead to some sick turbo build.

We've discussed this option before... but no one had a spare S13/S14/Z32 diff laying around to test. So that diff carrier is the same size and spline count as the S130 R200? Which side cv did you have to shave, and how much?

straight hate 12-06-2008 10:00 PM

I saw a KAAZ on ebay and thought they looked really similar to the R200. I with Nismo on this, give us some more details on that mod.

Hi NismoPick, it is the same size carrier as the R200 from a ZXT. I got new bearings from Nissan and they fit. I made sure it was the same spline count: 29 spline

It is the passenger side CV that needed trimming, and it only needs about 1/4 inch, or else it will bottom out in the LSD carrier

Here is one I practiced on:

Also, the KAAZ LSD doesn't have provision for the snap ring so my axles are "floating" now, but so far it doesn't seem to be a problem with sealing...

If I remember right, from 1984 and on, Nissan started using 12mm ring gear bolts. The KAAZ carrier is the same size for the ring gear, and you can still use the 10mm ring gear with the 12mm holes in the KAAZ.

(OEM open carrier shown)

I also have a NISMO LSD kit still in the box. But it is 30 spline and will only fit certain Skylines, some Pathfinders or some Z32's (n/a?). My buddy with an S130 bought the same kit, and he is getting some new Pathfinder CV axles re-splined to 29 spline for ~200 bucks. I know that is an expensive option, but the axle diameter is several mm larger than the ZXT CV's. It should be even more bullet-proof than the stock CV's. :038:

Hope this helped give us some more options...

Later! -hughdogz

Awesome info!!!! I've copied this thread into the 280zx section for continued discussion on LSD options: https://www.zdriver.com/forums/280zx-brakes-wheels-suspension-chassis-81/wanted-lsd-27358/

I've closed this thread so we don't dupe or lose discussions. If anyone has an LSD carrier to sell, please PM straight hate.
