Rings gone bad...

Well I found out yesterday that my piston rings are blown, so basically I'll have to build the engine.
On to better things. If anyone is interested in maybe trading their car with me, I'm open to offers. You can rebuild the engine for a few thousand, less than the cost of buying and installing a turbo on the stock bottom end. Then you can boost to your heart's content. I've got tons of other mods that most of you know about, but for now I think I'm done with the Z. I'd rather trade someone and have a near-stock Z that is easy to sell than mess with doing a rebuild, I just don't have the money right now.

SinCity350Z Jun 16, 2006 12:05 PM

That sucks. Sorry to hear that. What are you thinking of getting then?

EDIT: Second thought...Why don't you just put your Z back to stock, and sell the mods. That should be enough to pay for replacing the rings with new OEM ones.

roneski Jun 16, 2006 01:38 PM

Gah! So I guess the compression test didn't go so good huh?

What kind of boost were you running btw?

rob209 Jun 16, 2006 10:36 PM

up to 10psi around 4k, then 8psi from 5k to redline.... i think it started at the track last month, that's when i noticed the oil leak...

pope Jun 16, 2006 10:48 PM

that sucks man. i would be interested in trading you, but i just recently decided (tentatively) to sell my car and get something else... maybe an S4. Good luck with it man.

i8acobra Jun 17, 2006 07:14 AM

I'd love to trade, but I'd have to pay down my loan. Just don't have the cash right now. The fact that it's an '03 and needs a rebuild, would you throw any cash into the deal for a new '06 (1500 miles)?

EDIT: NM, I see you said you don't have any money right now.

Thats a good price... i wouldnt think it would be that hard to get someone to trade or buy (especially at that price)... you might have to try socal though.

I wouldn't be able to do that. If you decide to de-mod yours, I might be interested in some parts.

turbo_jimbo Jun 17, 2006 07:38 PM

i would own an audi if i wanted to take it in for repairs every day. but i dont.

rob209 Jun 17, 2006 08:08 PM

if anyone here helps me sell this, i'll pay a finders fee of 1% ($190 if sold for $19k)....

i have plenty of friends that dont have any problems with theirs... every company has their problems... including nissan

roneski Jun 17, 2006 11:01 PM

I know a few girls that had TTs and they definitely had problems with them. They spent a lot of time in the shop their first year. I wish I knew what specifically for, I'll have to ask.

Um, guys kept staring at them. They would get groped. They didn't really think about how much attention they would get with them.

Oh, wait. You're talking about cars aren't you?

702Fairlady Jun 18, 2006 02:49 PM

trust me, i know all too well about nissan's problems. ;)

scoobybri Jun 19, 2006 06:22 PM

You push the car beyond it's original specs and you pay the price...especially on internals. Sorry to hear about your problems. My turbo Miata engine is in pieces at the moment. So I feel your pain...

rob209 Jun 19, 2006 09:45 PM

already getting some local interest...

turbo_jimbo Jun 20, 2006 03:29 AM

whichever way it ends up, good luck.

rob209 Jun 21, 2006 10:51 AM

anyone know of a good place to do a compression and leakdown test? i had the compression test done at Douglas Nissan, but I want a leakdown test done as well.

Some guy takes a leak on your car right in front of you. If you get pissed, then you know that you still love the car and you should fix it and keep it. If you don't get pissed, then you should sell it. :D

Rob ...... don't give up hope. Do the leak down ....... lets figure how bad. I and a friend will come down to do the work. We'll get it running again and if you still want to sell it, I know someone that will go $30K if it is fixed.

rob209 Jun 21, 2006 03:41 PM

good info - now i have some hope...

"If all the cylinders have low compression (yep), but show minimal leakage, the most likely cause is incorrect valve timing. The timing belt or chain may be off a notch or two."
