Smoke from Firewall Area (90 2+2)

My mother recently bought a 90 2+2 and has has some smoke coming from the firewall area. Are there any known problems I might look at or any things I can check out. She took it to a shop and they told her they would have to pull the engine just to diagnose it. Sounds crazy to me....

What color is the smoke? That could diagnose the problem, more than likely it's probably and exhaust leak or worst head gasket going. One thing that could be doing it is the rear main seal. It'll leak oil and burn off the oil on the hot engine. Does it start to smoke right away or after the car warms up, if it starts to smoke right away I would guess it's just the exhaust maninfold or something that is leaking. They will have to pull the engine to change it too.. If they pull the engine I would have a line of things also to change while they have it out.

How many miles is on the car?
