My new 83 ZX

I just bought this 1983 280zx turbo, for my first car. So far it is better than i could have ever imagined. Its got 145k on the original engine, the body has no rust on it at all. It runs perfectly and I couldnt be happier. I took a couple of crappy pictures of it, my scanner is no good so you cant see much detail in the pics. I've checked and changed the fluids that needed to be done. And thats it so far....What do you guys recommend I should do first to it? For now i wanna keep the body and most of the interior stock. Sorry if this is the wrong forum to post this in.

up the boost? I think that will make it a little too fast... I'm thinking about making a cold air intake. I know someone who can mandrel bend a 3" dia aluminum cylinder for free for me...Is there anything fancy I need to do to make it fit?

...plus it is an 83 like you said before. The 10th anniversary was 1980. (1970-80)

Also, that is a very nice car! Enjoy it and don't crash it!

Tuuurbo Great looking ZT .

I've had mine since 1983 and will not give it up. Keep the interior original (upgrade the stereo) and perfomance upgrades to the engine are a nice touch.

The first item that you will want to obtain is a Performance computer (ECU) upgrade, followed by the Intercooler. These items are prerequisites for additional upgrades.

Replace the CAT with a straight exhaust pipe (a.k.a. test pipe) after vehicle inspection or after emmisions testing. Keep the orig CAT intact and put the CAT back on prior to inspection. Any muffler\Exhaust shop can make it for you with flanges on each end. If you have vehicle emmisions testing where you live and you gut a CAT and fail, they are very expensive.

What type of intercooler would you recomend? Im just starting to get into the whole turbo scene, so i got a bunch to learn. And is it really all that important to let the turbo idle after youve been driving normally?

Go to this web site and check it out. (catalog\performance\engine upgrades\turbo\intercoolers.

Idling eng (1-2 mins) after high RPM's on your turbo allows a cooling off period, prior to shutting eng off. Otherwise, the heated oil and shaft bearing "cooks" after shut down. Normal driving prior to shutting off eng is no problem. 132,000 miles on mine with no probs.

Do ainternet google search on Turbo engines. It will give you a base to work from.

Intercooler is approx 24" Wide x 18" High by 3.5" thick and 100% aluminum. I bought the exact same system that MSA has in their catalog from HKS for $800 eight years ago. MSA sells for $1,800 in the catalog...way overpriced. Their are existing non Datsun cars that are in a salvage yard that have a setup that will fit but you will have to fabricate the plumbing.

I am sure their are people on this site who have used another type of intercooler.

zx seats

Shes nice,, Does you voice controls work? Tip, i will check with a freind who has a leather interior in tan originally out of an 83 your car looks really sweet, still has the 280zx suede in the seats in excellent condition, I would add the fact louvers to the back, there hard to find but will be rounded at sides , yours an automatic or 5 ...you can still order alot of the interior parts from nissan dealer including the turbo stripe i bought to put on a black car i restored about a year ago i sold it because it was black...im really partial to the marroon..my old car is posted under wanteds.wally
