how much to pay for 88 na

Hi there,

My names Jacob, I lost access to my old account so I had to create a new. To cut to the chase though I'm looking to buy a new z, I currently own a 50th ae but am wanting a new project car. The z I'm looking at is a black 88 non turbo 5 speed. The car has 88,000 miles, its a 2 owner vehicle. Car has been kept in a storage unit for past 9 years, the current owner only put 9k miles since owning. Drives it once a week. The interior is fantastic. Looks about as good as it gets. Grey leather with digi dash, stock radio and dash work perfect as well as the a/c. Seats are perfect. No rust. Runs great. The only downside is that it needs a new timing belt and tires. The front bumper has quite alot of rock chips so probably needs re painting. current owner is 60 years old. Car has been maintained at dealership its whole life. He's asking 5900, what do you all think its worth based on my description?

Thanks in advance

I bought my 87 Turbo 5 speed w/T-tops for $2800.00 and I researched Z31s out reasonably well before I bought it. It wasn't in anywhere as good of shape as you describe the car you are looking at, but did only have 107,500 miles. I have spent around $2200.00 to get it into 90% of the shape you describe the car you are looking at. The turbos seem to bring around $1500 more than the N/A's which from my research would make the car you're talking about car worth between $5500-$6500.00 in "fully maintained-solid driver" type condition. Depending on what you would have in changing the timing belt, as well as any other catch up type maintenance, he is in the ballpark but a little high. The other thing is what you intend, are you going to hang onto the car or try to re-sell it for a little profit. Given this, I would figure $6K minus what expense you figure you're going to have, and that is what I would want to pay for the car. Of course if you really like it and want the car all of this is B.S., go and buy the thing. I ended up with my old Porsche (a one owner 1979 model 924) that way and never really regretted paying a little too much.

Hey thanks alot for your reply, you have quite a collection of cars going there I do really like the 88 300zx im looking at and i do plan to own it as long as it it still runs!(i say that now) but i do hope to keep it for a good long time, i have owned my 50th ae for about 8 years so far and didnt have any intention of making a profit on it. Didnt even think i would ever sell it but times change and moods you know? i have posted a link with a few pics of the car, the body pics arent very good and dont do it justice, sorry but you can see what i mean about the interior at least. take a look and let me know if you still stand with your price recommendation.

They dont come much nicer than that!! That color scheme is the best by far of all the colors nissan offered. Ide say your price is within ballpark for that beauty!

Wow, that interior is totally spotless. This car actually reminds me a lot of my Porsche, not exactly one of a kind but certainly unusually nice. I would stand by my assessment and say that he is a little high but in the ballpark. If you figure that the timing belt is worth $200-450 and the paint touch up work in the $250-400 range, then $5K +/- a couple of hundred would be a good price. You can't just run down to Carmax and find another one of these though, so if he is firm on his $5900 then you make the call. That was what happened to me on the 924, I wanted to pay $400 less than I paid but decided I wanted the car enough to live with his price. Super well cared for old cars are hard to find, if this is what you want then make the deal.
