any one here supercharged???
any one here supercharged???
yeah i was wondering if any one has taken the supercharge route and how they like it cause im thinking about supercharging cause its a little costly but i want the power and plus it should be easier than turboing right now by looking at everyones problems with turboing.
The best way I found to do it was with a procharger but it was not enough power and about the same price.. I am building a 450WHP turbo motor with SDS stand alone for about 3500.00 includin the cost of the engine..
Go to www.hybridz.org and search for it.

a supercharger cannot provide that for me as cheap as turbo. And the turbo I am using has an effieciency of 76% at 18PSI so its not that far from s/cing.
I don't think i've ever heard of anyone getting over 400hp on an L28. Are you sure you aren't over-estimating your numbers? I'd like to know what mods you are doing in order to reach that number. Also, there is no way that the rest of the drivetrain is going to be able to hold that power. You are talking serious modifacations man and a heck of a lot more than $3500.
Tuned properly, over 400 is completely possible. I think there was even a L28ET in that Z magazine that was putting out like 450. Some of those old ZX racers used to put out 500-600HP turbocharged. So it's doable, and those engines were completely balanced and blueprinted with quality internals and some really good tuning. So it's definitely possible. They mentioned those cars in this Datsun engine book I have.
But yeah, you're looking at some serious dinero. The L's are tuff from the crank down, and use a turbo block, they are more rigid and have better coolant flow around the cylinders.
Supercharging would be different, and those numbers are achievable with a supercharger. But it would be far easier with a turbo setup, not neccessarily cheaper though. Supercharger don't need all that custom exhaust work and most are self contained when it comes to oiling. Powerbands alot more friendly for your daily driver too. And that $3500 will probably only cover the supercharger itself. That could get you an entire turbo setup.
I'd still turbo though.

Yes, there was a car in the Z magazine putting 450 to the wheels with a turbo l28 motor. I've seen the car in person (he's also in San Diego), and it's very real. Also, you'd be surprised what the drivetrain in that car can handle. My buddy with tthe 383 stroker motor in his Z is proof of how strong that car is. He put's out terrifying horsepower with that car and puts it to the ground via the original rear end. He had a chevy rear end in it, but it kept grenading... out of desparation one day he put the stock rear end back in, and has been running it ever since. To give you and idea of how fast his Z is... his other car is a 2003 Corvette Z06 and he calls the vette his "Slow car" and that's no bullS*&t!

All the machine work is being done as a favor by a friend {you scatch my back I will scratch yours kinda thing} but I am paying the shop cost price on parts I think i'm looking at 3500.00 Tops for everything.
ya, if you can get an R200 LSD for free. Those things run about $500-700 these days. What about injectors, fuel pressure regulator, $800 intercooler, custom intake pipes, modified or custom built exhaust manifold for your T60, fuel rail, new fuel lines to the tank, fuel pump, NISMO seat belts, and neon foot pedels?!?

} But its worth it. Havent figured out the fuel pump, probably holley electric. I will be posting pics later as well as reciepts..COMPRESSOR SPECS:T04S housing flow: 61 lbs/min 781cfm .70 A/R housing 60 TRIM wheel TURBINE SPECS:T3 .63 A/R housing HIGH FLOW 76 TRIM stg 3 wheel {Sorry I posted the wrong turbo} here are the pics.

OK that makes much more sense. You're not building a 400hp L28 turbo for $3500.
With all the parts you already have, and all the thousands of dollars of free labor you're getting, you only have $3500 left to spend. That's a bit more accurate of a claim.

Real cost to do it (without favors!) is going to run at least $6k and probably closer to $8k and for a REALLY bullet proof setup $10k.

If anyone wants to move to AZ I can get it done for you for the same price..
It's a Nissan engine, it can be built to take anything. Their blocks, with the exception of the newer ones, have been shown to withstand some pretty wicked numbers, some even with stock bottom ends. I hear the VQ engines are pretty easy to grenade though.

Are you doing to do the work yourself or pay someone to do it? If you are doing it yourself im betting it will be longer than 2 months. There are always snags and things you don't expect along the way. But good luck with it man. You have to post some dyno numbers and pictures when you are done!

..But about the snags I was taking off the water inlet pipe water and one of the bolts snapped off and is stuck in the head so that has to be drilled out now..
I got it. Don Devendorf's Electramotive 280ZX put out over 650HP with the L28ET. That's a full blown race car mind you, but if the engine can handle that kind of abuse it will definitely handle anything you can throw at it on the street.
Oh, and no he was not running the stock intake manifold or fuel system. But he did still have the distributor mounted in the stock location. Which is something that was said to hinder the high RPM performance of the L28, but apparently, it wasn't that much of a hinderance, 650 horses, good God!!!
Still any doubters on the potential of the L28. And has anyone ever seen the O.S. Giken head? Dual cam for the L28. Don't know if they still make it or not though, but that would be wicked.
