Nissan Altima

Well I've been working on an Altima for a week or so now and I finished changing the tranny and clutch in it and I start it up. the engine is making tons of knocking and pounding like its being beat to death with a hammer. I pulled each spark plug wire and No change in sound at all and if revved it gets REALLY bad. also gets extremely hot and there is flowing coolant in the radiator.

Any ideas what blew up? Its coming from teh timing chain side buy the way. Im thinking Its about to toss a rod or something.

PS. I had to change the oil pan as it was smashed up into the engine, idk if it was enough to get to the pickup tube. so ya I'll post the story bout the car tomorrow when Im not dead tired

PSS its like 90s with an I4 KAsomething...I think...

Does the valve cover say NISSAN TWIN CAM 16VALVE ? If so, it's the KA24DE.

If the sound is coming from the timing cover, it's probably one of the timing chain guides (the KA24DE has two chains). Pull the valve cover & check the slack on the cam chain.

Did it make this noise before you worked on it?

Ok yes its a KA24DE. and Idk so heres the story.

My friends pot smoking son to the car out mud bogging and smashed in the oil pan and put a hole in it, he drove the car with the hold in the pan for a few hours then put 1 GALLON of oil in the car to keep his dad from noticing and then took the car on a cruise, once he parked it it leaked the final bit of oil left in the car. it was ran without oil for who knows how long.

It wont rev very high at all (like 4K tops) and knocks like a being hit with an air hammer @.@ IMO I think it might be toast... But I'll pull the valve cover and check.

BlueKitsune 09-19-2009 02:00 PM

I know lol. to late tho He doubt him a 90s ford ranger @.@
So the engine is close to toast? Rebuild-able or just replace it?

skib 09-19-2009 02:04 PM

its rebuildable, but your best off replacing it

BlueKitsune 09-19-2009 02:15 PM

Kk I'll give him the bad news. after he spent $600 on a new transmission for it

skib 09-19-2009 02:23 PM

tell him to buy a Chiltons/Haynes for $20

not only will he learn about his car but its also got enough heft to deliver a decent "idot" blow the back of his sons head :075:

best $20 hell spend :023:

BlueKitsune 09-19-2009 02:27 PM

Already has it lol He "hired" me to work on the car as he doesn't have time too.

Im shocked his kid isnt dead really hes just THAT stupid...

hmm I dont remember seeing anything bad when the oil pan was off. and the hole wasnt really big enough to let metal shavings thought. it was more of a crack. but with that not I think its toast still Would a valve hitting a piston sound like a hammer beating on the engine?

skib 09-19-2009 02:30 PM

thats the sound of a bottom end knock caused by > a spun rod/crank bearing caused by > oil starvation

BlueKitsune 09-19-2009 02:31 PM

Wouldnt undoing a plug one at a time make it sorta go away at whichever one? Unless their all spun lol

skib 09-19-2009 02:34 PM

even if the a cyl isnt firing the whole rotating assembly is still all moving

Im working on a Ford Ranger right now that spun a crank bearing, the crank is toast.
and Im hoping the rods and cam all check out too

BlueKitsune 09-19-2009 02:36 PM

Yikes. Well off to Pick-n-pull!

What other Nissans had the KA24DE?

skib 09-19-2009 02:38 PM

the duel cam KAs cam in:

2000-2004 Nissan Xterra
1998-2004 Nissan Frontier
1993-2001 Nissan Altima
1991-1998 Nissan 240SX

BlueKitsune 09-19-2009 02:43 PM

Seems to be missing a little info on what you did with the crank lol
By the sounds of it, it may just be cheaper to find another KA24DE and drop it in

NismoPick 09-19-2009 05:00 PM

I took the crank & block to the machine shop & said:
Clean up the crank, bearing journals, new rings, bearings, and re-install the bottom end.

I think the total cost of my bro's 240sx rebuild was about $800 (machine work & parts).

Ouch...
