Chevy Silverado

Soooo while me Z has bitten the dust for now, I'm driving my truck and I'm curios if anyone knows how to get more MPG out of that thing...
its getting 12MPG @.@

94 Chevy Silverado C1500, 350 V8, Auto

Ya I know Its not an Import :paranoid: I almost had a Nissan Pickup but this truck was free so ya.

SportBikeMike 07-09-2009 07:06 PM

I'm afraid your mileage is not going to get much better for that beast. I guess all you could do is routine maintenance: change the filters, check the air in the tires, etc. , might help a little bit.

BlueKitsune 07-09-2009 07:39 PM

I sorta figured that to be honest, but Doesn't hurt to ask huh?
I keep seeing all these things that add extra MPG (Inake, exhaust TBI spacer ECT) but I cant actually see them adding MPG

NismoPick 07-09-2009 08:34 PM

Tornado!!! +50hp!!!

It's a Chevy V8 truck... what kinda mpg did ya expect? :D

BlueKitsune 07-09-2009 08:39 PM

Ya no that thing is like $200...

And I know, but Ive had the truck practically forever.

dyno proven for losses up to 12WHP and decreased fuel economy, because any smart person would realize you want your air to flow as smoothly as possible! :D

accelerate gently. Leave a good amount of following room and go easy on the brakes so hopefully traffic will start moving again before you come to a complete stop.
Take any extra weight out of the truck. (tools and luggage) Run as small of diameter wheels as possible. Usually factory allows are your lightest and cheapest options. Run close to max air pressure in your tires. Remove the tailgate.

Lower it

Is this a 4x4 truck?

hoov100 07-09-2009 10:30 PM

removing the tailgate will seriously kil any aero that truck has.

BlueKitsune 07-10-2009 12:09 AM

No the truck is 2WD. And hoov is right, no tailgate = major loss of aerodynamics

Truck is bone stock, not even a simple leveling kit or even a new exhaust. the truck is mint sept for a dent in the bed and the 100K miles on the engine

hoov100 07-10-2009 12:14 AM

so why havent you swapped that motor in your z yet?

BlueKitsune 07-10-2009 12:18 AM

Uh Cuz that would cause a lot more problems with the Z and leave me with nothing to drive...

That and AMERICAN engines dont belong in IMPORT cars

Niku-Sama 07-10-2009 12:58 AM

'94 have those strange barrel air filters in the housing on the passenger side right?
if so K&N is quite and improvment over the regular one, plus when you sell the truck it makes a decent filter to use on your z in the area where the stock filter housing used to be.

BlueKitsune 07-10-2009 01:56 AM

hmm
Its cheaper to fix the Z then buy that kit

Bleach 07-10-2009 09:25 AM

Lockheed actually performed drag tests on pickups with the tailgate both up and down, and found that drag was actually LOWER with the tailgate CLOSED! This ran counter to their intuition (and yours). The reason is that a closed tailgate sets up a large "bubble" of stagnant air that slowly circulates around the bed of the truck (we aero types call this a "separated bubble"). When air approaches the truck, it "sees" the bubble as part of the truck. So to the air, the truck looks like it has a nice, flat covering over the bed, and the air doesn't "slam" into the vertical tailgate. If the tailgate is open, or replaced by one of those "air gate" nets, however, that nice, separate bubble in the truck bed does not form (it "bursts"). Then the air approaching the truck "sees" a truck with a flat bed on the back of a tall cab. This is a very nonaerodynamic shape with a very LARGE drag. So, believe it or not, it's best for gas mileage to keep the tailgate CLOSED

Ok, I am now educated. :080:

audiofreak97 07-10-2009 10:57 AM

Wish my truck got 12MPG... I couldn't imagine anything would get you better milage that won't cost you a bit of money. You could do a tonneau cover if you can find one cheap, that may net you a couple MPG. Keep the A/C off, go the speed limit and all that, easy on the throttle(as said earlier) and all that other boring driving stuff...

BlueKitsune 07-10-2009 11:38 AM

Well so much for getting extra MPG lol

Bleach 07-10-2009 12:05 PM

Take the AC belt off.
Turn the overdrive button ON
Run proper size tires :)

BlueKitsune 07-10-2009 12:13 PM

Its not a ford, I cant do the first two lol and it has stock sized tires on it lol

81SacUti280zx 07-13-2009 07:43 PM

ok....find a vortec motor and swap it. lol...i got a 95 k1500 and i get 12-15 depends on the day lol. but just keep a tune up on it every 3k-5k and make sure ur tires are well inflated to the correct spec. as for the k&n its not much better unless its out of the engine bay. maybe than but with your throttle body its best to keep as much out of it as possible. try cleaning your injectors. theres only 2 so. as for header, exhaust, intake and a spacer it will increase horse power with the right combo. call up the major companies such as edlebrock, trickflow, magnaflow, and also try getting an aftermarket ignition system. we did my cuz's 92' c1500 stepside and he gets 19-22. about 25 on highway. so it just depends on the combos u use. since yours is 2 wheel drive its not too bad to find axle's with different gears that mnay help. i dont know what ratio's to use cause i have a 4wheel drive but i can get a hold of my cuz and see what he recommends.

BlueKitsune 07-13-2009 09:36 PM

Sweet. Too bad I cant do most of that really. But I'll look into it later.

The beds on the step sides where made mostly of fiberglass too tho. Well lest the outer shell of the bed anyways. That helps too

step sides? :puke: Take the bed off... saves weight so better milage :D

Skully 07-14-2009 10:10 PM

strap one of these on top of it..screw the gas milage :P

I cant agree more with you on the step sides. as for taking the bed off... can you say frame flex?

BlueKitsune 09-16-2009 12:17 AM

Well, sense my Z blew up I decided to hop in my truck, of course my 8 year old battery for that thing, was dead. changed it and it lived but I kept hearing a faint squeak

DAMN MICE HAVE INFESTED MY TRUCK! There in that cowling in front of the windshield. I cant see them, but I can hear them.
