2001 Camaro

Well i towed my buddies camaro home the other day because it over heated pretty bad. The head gaskets on both sides are no good. 5 out of 6 cylinders are full of water as well as the oil. it was sitting down at a shop and they looked at it and said oh the motor is no good its hydro locked blah blah blah! SO i brought it home and we started working on it. we pulled the spark plugs and cranked the motor over by hand didn't make any clunking noises and it didn't sound like anything was bent. so i thought we could move it faster using the starter. TO begin the battery was dead so we hooked it up to my truck and turned on the key, but the starter just made weird clicking noises like it wasn't engaging.. so i figured we'd pull the starter which i would think a simple task, not on a V-6! WE finally get it out and i thought damn this is a clean starter and everything than i took a second look... THe snout was missing!? I reached up in the block and the snout was broke off and jamming the motor.. so were hopin the heads can be milled and new gaskets put in and than it be driveable but we'll find out as soon as we start tearing down the motor....

i used to have a 95 v6 camaro, wasnt the fastest thing but it had a good engine, ran it over 10,000miles over the oil change mark and it was still going strong, but shortly there after it was totaled

That's something to be proud of (not changing your oil for 13k miles)?

we did some more work tonight well we just finished up for tonight. We are having fun doing everything without a manual. IS the crankshaft pulley left hand threads or what? I dunno but any how. WE got the valve covers off the intake off most everything off the front of the motor. God wanna talk about little hand room its not so bad until we tried to pull of the heads the bolts for everything that had to come off first were on the back of the block. Anyway heres some pix!! on a more positive note i'm getting a 98 ranger this weekend for FREE, only set back is the 235000 miles on a ford YIIIKKKKEEES. anyway here ya go!

Woot Woot! Chevy motors are about as simple as it gets. The "in-block" cam engine is a lot easier to work on.

flightforlife07 03-23-2007 08:49 AM

so uhh whats that little funny looking thing in the oil valley cuz i know it isn't the cam and I haven't seen one of those before... Too bad its a v-6 and everything is under the fire wall and hard to get to. Ya its pretty simple jsut a pain in the ass and we're putting the bolts back in as we go so we don't lose anything. we figured that that'd be the best idea other than labeling a bunch of little bags and we'd probably forget something anyway

Don't even mention lack of hand room until you've worked on a TT. I see you're standing in the engine compartment....that'll never happen in a Z unless the engine's out of it.

flightforlife07 03-29-2007 07:14 AM

We did some more work last night and we pulled the heads... it took about three hours to get everything else off around it. The cylinders were full of water and all but between 4 and 5 the head gasket was blown.

We're hoping that the rusted intake valve is ok...

flightforlife07 04-04-2007 11:24 PM

so we finished the camaro today... and found out that appearantly the Stretch head bolts MUST be changed! And that our top end gasket set was missing a gasket we didn't know existed! so we get to take it apart and start over YAY! another week of fun. ps. v-6 camaro's suck balls!!!!!

flightforlife07 04-07-2007 07:39 AM

holy crap we finsihed the car last night and fired it up. i don't think i've ever seen so much smoke in my life. there was still a little remnance of coolant in the exhaust and a tiny bit in the cylinders so it had to burn it all off.aside from the fact that he broke the alternator plug everything works and he's way excited to finally have his car back. too bad it cost him $5300 a year to insure it!!!!

snwbrderphat540 04-07-2007 05:01 PM

5300 a year for a damn V6 camero..... EWWWW!!!!! is he ****in insane?? lol. either go liability or get a car worth that kind of insurance. holy crap.

flightforlife07 04-07-2007 11:39 PM

haha that is for liability! he has 2 tickets and 3 no fault accidents and 1 at fault accident so ya.. oh well not my problem. on the plus side most of the paint on my truck polished up and looks kinda shiney i'm excited!!! he has a few bugs to work out like fixing his alternator right and retorque his rockers but it was fun...
