Not So Limited Slip

Ian and I ran the American Auto-X event at Castle last weekend. Although we loved the new Hoosiers - we were off the pace and discovered when we got home the limited slip is not so limited anymore.

It's an R-200 with 3.9 gears.

Anyone have suggestions for a rebuild? Location of parts?? Datsun Comp AKA NISMO is closed for "reorganization" until sometime next month. How strange is that???

We're also considering an R-180 - anyone have access to one with LS or a Quaife?? If we find an R-180 we'll rebuild the R-200 and sell it...
or work out a trade.

Thanks

Steve

Steve,
I just spoke with Nissan Motorsports and the LSD stuff for the R200 is still available. Let me know what parts your going to need to freshen it up and I will track down the part numbers and prices for you.

Not so limited slip

Mike

We have not torn it down yet - but I assume we'll need (at least) the clutch discs. The old Datsun Comp book lists 4 numbers - - - 38432-N3210, 38433-N3210, 38435-N3210, 38436-N3210. I'm not sure if the numbers have changed...

Thanks

Steve,
Those are the numbers that I have as well for the friction discs and the friction plate. Steve at Motorsports told me there is a way to make a spreadsheet that tells you how thick to shim it to make it have what breakaway torque. That way you aren't adding and subtracting so must to get close . I think last time we discussed this 100ft lbs came up a lot. Factory on these 70 ft lbs. and the R180's were set at 45.

Not so limited slip

Hi Mike,

Wow a spreadsheet like that would be great information. The only info I have is the original edition of - "How to Hot Rod and Race..."

It describes the BRE setting of 180 to 220 lbs of breakaway - some used up to 350 lbs. But no reference to the shims used to get there.

It does say shimming of .030 comes close to locking it up solid.

I certainly don't want that since we do run some fairly tight autocross courses.

Any idea how I can get some suggestions on shimming?

How limited is 45 ft/lbs? I have an 3.9:1 R160 LSD in my 260 and if you spin one wheel the other follows right along, but if someone grabs the other wheel, its not tremendously difficult to induce slip.

Which brings me to my next question. I've never really disassembled a diff. How much disassembly do I need to do to shim it? Do I just remove the half-shafts and the side plates and go from there? Is there anywhere on the net that has pics of, or describes the process? If 100 ft/lbs seems to be the going rate I'd like to try to bring things to that point.... Oh, and yeah, where can I get shims? Are there nismo/nissan part numbers?

Coments, suggestions, and razzing are, as always, welcome.

Lukas,
Here is a link to some good information on LSD rear diffs. He focuses on Nissan clutch types. The R160 was in the 510 and also the Subie. What I have found out from inquiring awhile back was most guys didn't check them from season to season , and figured out theirs were at less then optimum breakaway force.

I take it your was a Subie LSD one. I checked Nissan Motorsports catalog and they stlill show replacement parts for it however the LSD unit itself is NLA.

When I call there next time I will see what they have in stock for the R160.
