Ideas on clutch/flywheel combo's?

I'm currently building a solo1 car with plans on vintage racing in the future. Pics were posted under member rides a little while back. I'm probably putting too much thought into this, but I was curious. What kind of flywheel/clutch combinations are other guys (autocross and road racing) using, or planning on using? I'm considering a Tilton dual disc setup.

I use the Tilton 7 1/4" dual disc unit. When I bought this I was still doing a fair amount of Solo II work. Going from the standing start requires the larger unit. I plan on updating to the 5 1/4" unit this season.

Now that I am doing 100% track work I want the 5 1/4" setup. The smaller diameter gives you a lower Moment Of Inertia (MOI). A lower MOI puts less stress on the crank. It makes the car accelerate like it has a lower gear. The transmission will shift easier just like adding a light flywheel does, only better.

So if your parking lot days are done, get the small unit.

What kind of flywheel are you using with the 7 1/4"? I haven't been able to find any manufacturers that make a standard diameter flywheel which allows you to use the stock starter. Malvern makes a smaller one which requires his "special" starter. This looks like the way to go, even though he's pricey. Also do the 5 1/4" units noticeably wear faster? If so, in what relation to the larger unit? Interested in selling your 7 1/4" setup?

Preith,

If you would like to see about getting this 7 1/4" setup with the stock diameter flywheel you need to email me @ DrSideways@aol.com ASAP.

I am making some changes and I may be going ahead to the smaller unit if you want this one.

Thanks,

Alan
