Where can I get a diffuser?

Arrrgh! I've been searching the net for hours, and still can't find a skylight diffuser (mine is broken). :armata_PDT_35: Lowe's, Home Depot, Ace and other hardware stores around here said they don't carry them. It's just a textured piece of clear plastic (similar to a florescent light fixture cover) that mounts slightly recessed on my ceiling. I looked up "skylight cover", but only found covers that mount on the exterior of the house, so that's not what I need.

Does anyone know where I can get one? :022:

why do you want to block your skylight? whats the purpose of getting one installed then? i have a skylight in my B'room lol...

Well you can look for ...crap what is it? I think they are called drop cealings or suspended cealings or something...my friend and I put up panels in his kitchen and they were textured...I don't know how big your skylight is but we had to cut down these pieces...and we got them from the Home Depot. I think after we cut them they were 18 x 32 or something close to that...I hope that helps you a little.

Cuz without the diffuser, there's just a big whole in my kitchen ceiling, that's lined with silver insulation. The diffuser hides the insulation and tones down the light coming through, otherwise it's too bright. I'm constantly hitting the light switch to "turn off the skylight", thinking the electric lights are on. LOL!

Thanks. I thought about that, but it's not a flat piece of plastic - has a 1/2" lip where it mounts, then bows out in the center. I couldn't find anything similar to it at the home improvement stores. BTW, the entire panel is 21" x 21".

You can make a custom diffuser that drops in the middle, use some 1/4 dowels and make a frame then bring some dowels down to the center of the light and just put 4 triangular pieces of textured plastic panels in there and bam, there you go, a custom diffuer with little work that looks good for a cheap price. A little hot glue and some good ideas and you should be ok.

Z Car Barbie Sep 24, 2006 04:09 PM

Hahaha! What did you use to cut the plastic without breaking it?

thxone Sep 24, 2006 04:15 PM

We laid the panels on stacked up cardboard and used a really sharp utility knife, making sure to measure it..twice, mark it, score it then make progressively deeper cuts till it was in two pieces...go slow, cut away, wear safety goggles...you know, be careful.

snwbrderphat540 Sep 24, 2006 04:38 PM

when i have to cut plastic like that i melt it lol.....otherwise get a dremel with a cutting disk amd for metals...it will saw through it like butter and cleanly as well.

snwbrderphat540 Sep 24, 2006 04:38 PM

or for a cheaper method a hack saw will work/pvc cutter.

Did you try looking around on the metal frame that held the diffuser. The manufacturers name might be on it somewhere with a phone number, or do a google search.

Hmmm, I just went and checked, but didn't see any words or letters. It appears to be a makeshift job, and was installed when the house was built 5 years ago. Yah, I've been Googling all day. :(

Yes, they call it a "square tubular skylight". Those companies don't show the size I need, but it's a start! I'll call them tomorrow and see if they can make me one (21" x 21").

snwbrderphat540 Sep 24, 2006 05:26 PM

Z Car Barbie Sep 24, 2006 05:32 PM
