radar detectors?

anyone have one? i could probably find a thread on this by searching, but the forum has been so quiet the last couple days i felt like starting a thread.

i'm wondering what situations a radar detector works in. through a little searching, it looks like they don't do anything for you when you run up on a speed trap. so pretty much, if you pass a cop on the road, or he comes up behind you, then it will probably save you. i'm just wondering if the situations in which they can help you are really worth getting the detector for. i'm not too serious about getting one BTW, i've got too much to buy for the car.

yeah it does sound great. the escort 8500 also looks good. but i'd need one that is undetectable. i'm in virginia and all the cops have detector detectors.

Valetine1 is the best. I had them all ,escort. wisler, cobra, Bell etc, I even had one of the first ones, Bear finder. the valentine1 with arrows does let you know where they are at their instant on works great. However if you are going over 100 you must have very good brakes since you are shorting the distance and your reaction time to put on the brakes. Now I must admit I have not try the new escort with their GPS. I'll give you an example, few moths ago six of us we where going to a show we were traveling at the speed of about 100 to 110, I was the only one with the Valentine1 , it detected a laser I slow down every body keep on, some pass me after that I became the leader, Valentine detected it before they did not only that it showed me where "interceptor" was at. Now this is my own personal opinion.

well, i think if i were going to get one i'd go with the 8500. between the price and the rep, it looks pretty good in my book.

i am wondering a bit about it though. it's not the most modern on the market, so are there detector detectors out there right now that can pick up the escort 8500? Va is the only state that still outlaws these lol. pretty crappy.

through research i've decided detectors are not reliable to detect speed traps, so only should be relied upon in places where cops can't be hiding.

your driving a car that has a motor based off an almost 100 year old design and you worried about a radar detector not being the most modern?

I've got two radar detectors & don't use either of them anymore. Why? Because all the police / highway patrols around here use laser guns. It's just a "point at you and shoot" principle. No radar / laser detector is going to save you from a random laser shot.

I say, save your money and invest it on something else.

like a bigger motor to outrun the cops? but we cant all just buy bikes an be faster then everyone else. (thats too easy)

well that's what they do at speed traps, when they're sitting, but they use the radars when they're moving. i pretty much know where all the speed traps around me are. it's the moving ones that i'm trying to avoid. for the interstate and the 55 zones around where i live. i'll buy one of those off you pick

radar's are helpful in many situations. but most highway police use laser now which is instant, so once the radar picks it up, its to late. but other than that they are great. escort is the better buy. valentine one is the best hyped and priciest. up to you which one you choose, but probably the same in function. any other company is a waste though. you can always go nuts and make a jammer or get a motorcycle and dont ever slow below 160 lol.

v1 saved my *** BIG time, and without the arrows it has i would likely have been hosed. i love that thing. i don't have one personally, but i borrowed it on my 16 hour run from San Diego to Seattle. i have some beltronics detector but have not used it in quite a while, as most cops are using laser around here now. though on the bright side, there is no law against jamming laser.
