my DSM! what went wrong and the build thread

well i have been long overdue for posting, im probably going to have this finished up in a week, here's some pics of the engine in steps, unfortunately i didn't take any of how dirty and overall just crappy it was looking before i got to it, not the shit looks brand new. here we go!

flywheel resurfaced:

threw on the evo3 MLS head gasket (133 dollars OUCH!) and then the head and started more assembly, cleaned the intake mani to look new again and painted the turbo mani

the engine has good condition low mile pistons new con rod bearings and new rings and a hone so not a full rebuild, just an overhaul i guess, and all new gaskets and paint

dads Z STILL getting painted

ahhhh the tranny, DSM's only true flaw
http://i96.photobucket.com/albums/l1...m/P3050084.jpg

it will get rebuilt tomorrow probably, not by me though.

and now for the REALLY bad pistons i pulled out, number 3 and 4 pistons. anyone care to take a guess as to whats wrong with them? lol

KasbeKZ 03-05-2009 09:10 PM

looks like all the pistons had at least a little damage?

i just can't imagine doing all that work and having a great car and then selling it right away. it's going to be so fun as soon as it's back together.

snwbrderphat540 03-05-2009 09:20 PM

it will... sept i can't imagine keeping a car i put all that work into and not forged rods and pistons to make it worth it in the long haul, then i would actually want to sink money in it. with what i did, its a good car, just.... not where i would want it to be i guess... idk i feel conflicted

Niku-Sama 03-05-2009 09:22 PM

i knew it'd be run to shit, oh well it cheap to fix when you do it your self

NismoPick 03-05-2009 09:43 PM

That head looks sick. :106:

snwbrderphat540 03-05-2009 10:36 PM

i love DSM heads, they are the best imho, look at those massive ports!!!! they out flow a SBC haha.... i wish i could take 3 of these and make a Z DOHC..... but yeah it wasnt run to shit by me, note to self, dont buy an import from a mustang guy

hoov100 03-06-2009 12:49 PM

your already rebuilding the motor? damn, just be sure to break it in before you turn up that boost.

snwbrderphat540 03-06-2009 11:21 PM

the boost will be turned down but i dont know to what as i wont be revving its over 3.5k for the 1st 1k miles and also, probably no more than 50% throttle.

also, i tore into the trannies myself today, found a shifter fork cracked in half, all the gears looked fine, im hoping/thinking that was why my 1st gear didnt work, by didnt work i mean i would clutch shove it in first, let off clutch get a mad grind and the stick spat back at me. any one else think this is my cause? i took the other tranny swapped forks and some guts and re-assembled, i'll have to hook up the shifter link and cables and see if it will run through the gears tomorrow.

260zturbo 03-07-2009 09:29 AM

ouch!!! keep us updated

snwbrderphat540 03-07-2009 09:38 AM

will do, im just hoping that fork was the problem, also, floor it to break it in.... idk.... seems sacrilegious

hoov100 03-07-2009 10:43 AM

honestly this is what i do when i have to break in a motor, for the first 1k miles, take it easy and let everything clearance itself, next 1k miles, just do average street driving, next 1k miles do some more average street driving with an occasional pull to redline, no pedal to the floor and dropping the clutch, just a gradual increase in RPM, all this should be done at no more then stock boost, and every no and then during break in, check thing out, pull the valve cover, check the torque on the cam bearing caps, look for leaks...etc this is how i have done it and have yet to have any problems.

snwbrderphat540 03-24-2009 04:48 PM

ugh!!!!!! a little update, motor and tranny 100 percent back together, i traded an extra small 16G turbo i had lying around for a efi harness that was in better condition than mine, turns out it was for an auto though, no big i thought has a few extra connectors.... NOPE!!!! ecu plugs are completely different. and getting to the ECU on a DSM is BULLSHIT!!!! its dead center in the dash under and behind the radio. its completely burried. so pissed... would just had to drop the engine in and gone. time to send out some hate e-mail lol

NismoPick 03-24-2009 09:25 PM

Buahahahahah!!!

snwbrderphat540 03-24-2009 09:54 PM

totally.... not funny. lol.

NismoPick 03-25-2009 05:24 AM

So what's wrong w/ your stock harness?

snwbrderphat540 03-25-2009 06:33 AM

its just old tight and brittle from all the heat and some wires have cracked at the connectors or are starting to break off. worst comes to worst i can cut connectors with pig tails off the good harness and splice, but i'd rather not, i dont have much luck with wire connections.

hoov100 03-25-2009 06:46 AM

if there are z32's running around with the stock wiring harness's i should hope yours will live as well.

snwbrderphat540 03-25-2009 08:49 AM

most of those haven't had their engine pulled, after disconnecting all the brittle ends alot have fractured, im sure it COULD run, but this is a smarter and good solution that was free for me.

hoov100 03-25-2009 10:50 AM

yeah, worst I'm sure you have been driving something else around town, so it sitting a few more weeks would change anything.

duowing 03-25-2009 12:03 PM

Reading about your wiring connectors sorta sounds like some of the connectors on my Z31. At some of the connections, especially on the CHTS connector it was all brittle and looked like it was coming apart. It also doesn't help that Nissan gave little length for that connector. So it's really easy for it to get tugged, stretched, and cracked.

sho_shane 03-28-2009 06:36 AM

Man this makes me wish I still had my TSI :D

snwbrderphat540 03-28-2009 11:08 AM

this makes me want an evo... lol.

domsgarage 03-28-2009 11:53 AM

This one time, about 5 years ago, I helped my friend rebuild his DSM. He put about 20k into the motor. It was running really good, really quick, then he changed the oil on it (he was a master tech at firestone) and he only hand tightened the oil filter (i guess about as tight as a four year old girl would), ANYWHO, on the way home, the oil filter fell over, melted the pistons to the block.

Long story short. I wish he would have just handed me the 20k (+16k for the car that was fine and fast already) and asked me to wipe my ass with it. I would have, even though I may have suffered from some sort of overdose... or have gotten pregnant...

I dont even know what im talking about anymore.
