Experience on improving car part material DIY?

So is there anyone here that has experience in DIY improvement of automotive parts? I'm helping out my stepdad, he's running a business that produces exchangable car parts for car repair shops. They are cheaper than the original parts but should be just as good, if not better.

And that's where his concern lies. His automotive parts are good and pretty much comparable to the original ones but they need to be even better. I have been suggesting that maybe he could try out hardening them via boronizing. It's a process in which borides are diffused into the surface of materials made of steel (I'm not sure how exactly it works but you can read up on it here). Do you think that would be a good idea? Or should we do something else? If so, what would you suggest?
