new guy

hey guys, i'm new here. i hope i can use this forum to keep me up to date on the z cars that i've loved all my life. i hope i can help in any way possible. i'm an electronic engineer in birmingham alabama. i used to teach tech seminars for nissan, mostly on electrical and electronics on z cars. i had a part in the development of the HICAS system on 90-96 zcars. i'm also a 12volt and audio specialist,(yes if you're looking for someone to blame ,i had alot to do with the Bose audio system in the zcars and maximas, hey when it works it sounds great!). anyway i'm not bragging i'm also an idiot. i just wanted to formally introduce myself. i own a 1983 280zx 5speed NA with a factory 518,000 miles and i have a 1990 300zx tt 5speed with a factory 412,000 miles on it both original engines never rebuilt or anything both run good. i do want to rebuild the 90tt. it doesn't smoke or anything but its starting to have leaks here and there and you guys know for a twin-turbo motor that is alot of miles. it's time. i'm glad to meet you guys. justun ross

I just have 1 question....What kind of oil do you use? That's a ton of miles, Chief. Welcome aboard. I hear the 350 crew is looking for a moderator, so you could be the next one. Hopefully that doesn't scare you away. You guys (350 owners) are pretty scarse. I have to say, you're off to a bad start though. You were involved with the HICAS and BOSE setups?!? That's 2 strikes against you already. :D J/K. I got rid of the BOSE a long time ago, and HICAS isn't that bad, so no hard feelings. As you will quickly see, we're not like other Z forums. Go ahead and ask anything. you can pretty much say anything you want also. As you can see by my title, I enjoy sarcasm, so if/when you're the target, don't take offense. It's all in good fun.

Cheers

welcome man, glad to have you here:)

Riz Z Speed 02-10-2004 09:48 PM

412K on the original turbos!?!
I don't mean to call you a liar, but I don't believe it! What you're claiming is that your original stock turbos lasted over 4 times what is the norm! Unbelievable.

Welcome aboard otherwise!

emo236 02-10-2004 10:30 PM

He never said it still boosts nicely or that he never rebuilt the turbos or replaced them. It could be very true, especially for someone who knows the car as well as someone who helped design it. Justin, that's pretty sweet that you were invovled in designing stuff for my car. Personally, I kind of like Hicas for normal road driving. No comment on Bose...it's almost all the way gone.

emo236 02-10-2004 10:31 PM

And 91, I don't mean to break your heart, but he didn't mention owning a 350.

91zxtt 02-10-2004 10:40 PM

Oh, cut me some slack, I had made an assumption since I 1st saw this under the Z33 forum. I later saw it under every forum, hence the deja vu I spoke of. Rizz probably already scared the guy off though by questioning his mileage achievements. 412k is a frggin' eternity. I still want to know what oil he uses. Anything is possible with the proper maintenance. I just hope he didn't have any say with the length of the wires in the car. Whenever you need to do anything with the wiring, it seems like it's about 3-4 inches short of what would be ideal to work with. Take for example, the wiring for the stereo. If you don't have 8 elbows and 4 wrists, it's almost impossible to do any work back in there.

emo236 02-10-2004 10:48 PM

Naw, he'll be back...he seemed down. He can probably answer your questions as to why. And I agree, I think it's very possible to have a z with that many miles.

that is right on the money...when i was wiring my radiator to the ignition, i had to use those wire strippers that don't cut wire, they just push the insulation out of the way..the wires seem too tight

justin...you there? Are you coming back?

ok, yes they are the original turbos, never replaced or rebuilt. other than a clutch or two, plugs, filters, etc., everything is original and works. i have always used castrol full synthetic oil and a wix filter. usually 5w-30,once or twice 5w-50. and i may start some static with this one but......wix is the best filter. there are alot of good filters but i believe wix is the best. case in point, if you go buy a new peterbuilt or mack truck or say a catapiller bulldozer, or a john deere combine, you can guess what those kind of machines cost. well you can put the factory filter(peterbuilt, john deere etc.) or a wix everything else will void the warranty. what does that tell you? truthfully, if you change the oil on time with any quality filter and any oil, you'll have know problem. as for oil the approved weight (10w-30,20w-50 etc) but more important the higher grade. the grade is on the back in small letters listed as API service grade, the grade will usually start with an S, like SL,SG,SH and so on. the higher the letter after the S, the better. for instance, SH is a higher grade than SG. another reason i my z's have lasted so many miles is i don't run them that hard. i knew i couldn't really afford to repair 'em if i broke 'em. BUT! my 1983 280zx i have noticed runs better if i run it HARD. i've had it since 1989 and have been everywhere in it. the car was originally won by a 60 year old lady on" The Price Is Right" game show during the "show case showdown" she towed it home, sold it, paid the taxes on it and kept the rest. the guy she sold it to traded it in and i bought it. i had no idea of the car's history when i bought it. i found some "Price is Right" paperwork in the glove box and started checking into it. pretty cool huh! oh, i had NOTHING to do with the length of wires on the stereo and you're right, they are incredibly too short!
sorry so long,
justun ross

I've never even heard of a Wix filter! And good job on taking such good care of your Z.

Riz Z Speed 02-13-2004 11:22 PM

I do believe the Wix brand is in the Oil Filter comparison. One of the comparisons at least. Interesting history. Is that for the TT or the 280?

emo236 02-13-2004 11:24 PM

where can one get a wix filter?

Riz Z Speed 02-13-2004 11:41 PM

Obviously they're available in Alabama!:D

I can guarantee that comes as no surprise to anyone. :D

Justun-
Good info on the oil and the filters. Glad to hear you didn't work with the Z32 wiring; otherwise, UPS may have been delivering a special "ticking" box to you. :D

I know this is jumping on an old thread, Wix is all we used on our trucks and equipment when we still ran the Tankers. Still use a 2-quart size on my old 78' blazer. Chev big block 366 truck engines called for the same filter that fit the small block 400 only more capacity. They're available in Arkansas too.
