Water Pump
 

Have any of you guys changed your water pump? Im wondering how difficult it is, as mine is leaking :(

Yes I have, twice actually. Seems you and I talk a lot here. So anyhow, it is not hard but time consuming. You will need a special sized socket to fit the pulley and you will need a pulley puller in order to get the timing covers off. You will also need a set of torx wrench heads. So what can I suggest while you are doing your WP? Well for starters, use the drain cocks on the side of the engine and drain everything there first. No point in giving everything an antifreeze washdown. Replace all hoses and that you can and includes the two stubbies behind that are hard to get to. Thermostat and if you have it all apart and you have not done your 60 or 120k service, this is an ideal time to do it all and prevent any serious failures. I have posted for COZ and Courtesy nissan before, they sell kits.

Scale of 1-10 I would say a 5 at worst

As for replaceing the water pump..there is no gaskets. You will need Grey RTV silicone. Your local NIssan Dealer has it, or you can look for it at like Advance Autoparts. You will not only need the water pump, but the two little 2" long ruber hoses behind it as well as a new thermostat. Unless of course you are going to keep the old one.

I received a gasket with my water pump from courtesynissan. I responded to a similar question elsewhere...... you can follow the tt.net 60k write-up...... iirc, follow steps 1 thru 17, then go to steps #21 thru #24.

I got a gasket with mine also... Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm.

You DO need a gasket for replacing the water pump. You don't need any SPECIAL sockets for the crank pulley, just a pulley puller and a torque wrench that will go high enough, also, breaker bars are also helpful. You will need one of those little hex nut in a socket things though for getting to the water pipe screws and stuff. You also need silicone gasket for the water pipes. replace thermostat while your in there, the short hoses behind the water pipeps. If your going to do the whole timing belt 60k / 120k tune up. Also if you do the tune up, I recomend replacing your cam VTC springs with the JWT spring set. It's only $25 and should be done while your doing that stuff. As far as just changing the water pump. can be done in 2 hours if you know what your doing.

You don't need to remove the crank pulley if you're just doing the w/p. Don't forget a new T-stat.

My bad...I should clarify before getting ahead of my thoughts, just a push to do everything while it is apart. An extra 15 minutes to get that far. A lot of people I talk to here say if it is leaking and coolant gets on the belt then it is in the best interest to get it done. Oh...and we get gaskets here in Japan, too.

Yes you do, You can't get the lower timing belt covers off unless you remove the crank pulley.

LOL..... since I can't post images, I can't show you that you can remove the W/P with the T-belt covers still on.

You can change the W/P with the covers on.

See'ing as how the bolts are under the timing belt covers.... you really can't.... unless you cut through it and cut it in half, but that then still poses the problem of getting the new one on......... or i guess you could cut holes in your T-belt covers....
