hey, I was wondering if anyone else has a ticking sound when the engine idles when warming up.


if i start it in the mornings (at least 5 hrs rest) it doesn't tick, but after warming up a little (3-4mins driving) the ticking starts. sounds like it might be a stuck lifter.
but after some freeway driving, the sound goes away, even when idling (engine hot). but if I shut down the engine and start it up even an hour later, the ticking is back again.
when I rev it, like up to 3k or so, the ticking dissappears but after idling for 5 seconds after revving, the ticking slowly comes back.
I haven't noticed any performance losses, but the noise sure is irritating, especially with the windows down next to a wall/car. btw, I'm using mobil 1 synthetic 10w-30. should i use something thicker (I live in Hawaii)?

anyone know any expericenced z32 mechanics here?

 

That tick sound is probably the lifters but replacing them can be expensive. i suggest going to an auto parts store and getting some noise ruduction additive or what ever helps lifter noise first. if that doesnt work you will probably end up changing the lifters. which isnt fun at all. i had a tick sound after i put cams in and taking the plenum off is a bitch. good luck!
