strange exhaust noise

1993 300zx n/a

when ever i accelerate and put load on the engine my car makes a strange, high pitched growling noise. i'm guessing it is coming from somewhere in the exhaust. this only happens when the car is cold. once it warms up the noise goes away.

do you guys have any ideas what would be making that noise? thanks.

Welcome to ZDriver! :006:

From your description, I'd say it's either gremlins, aliens, or the car is possessed. :D

It's pretty hard to describe a sound in words on the internet, and even harder to decipher someone's attempt to describe it...

How about a sound or video clip? Youtube.com ...

hahah! thanks for the quick reply. my car's pretty old and needs alot done to it. however, i've gone through the engine and it seems to be the only thing on the car that has no real issues. it runs strong.

i just can't figure out what that growling noise is. when the car is cold, it will make a strange growling exhaust noise. The harder i accelerate, the louder the noise gets. it almost sounds like an exhaust leak at the headers...once the car is thoroughly warmed up the noise goes away:017:

ill see if i can pull off a youtube vid if this doesn't help.

... an exhaust leak is possible. When things heat up, they expand, which could be sealing your leak.

Could also be AIVs (search here and twinturbo.net for information on how to eliminate them).

P.S. Kudos for putting your cars information at the start of your thread. Not enough people do this.

Egrs maybe... I had a ranger that did this and it was the egr.

I had an alien in my car doing the same thing once.

I tried to get a video but he did some voodoo on my camera and erased the footage.
