steering problem

i have a 93 z32 n/a and i noticed somthing with the steering lately. when i am turning the wheel , lets say 90 degrees then on the way back i am already going straight when the wheel is at around 50-45 degrees. I test drove my friends z and his steering is percise and makes mine feel crap so i know its not just me getting used to the z. there is also a lot of slack in the wheel when turning right . left side has the same problem but with minimal slack.

any ways on fixing or going about inspecting the problem would be appreciated. Thanks!:D

First I'd make sure that your belts are tight and to spec. Second, check the fluid level for the power steering. Only ATF, remember. But ultimately sounds like your car is need of an alignment. Time to shop around.:)

Stupid question, but why ATF and not Power Steering Fluid?

Z_WRECKER Feb 10, 2004 07:11 PM

yeah Riz... i've been using power steering fluid myself....hence the name...power steering

91zxtt Feb 10, 2004 07:29 PM

Uh-oh. You may have just opened yourself for a good lashing. If I knew why ATF was to be used over Power Steering Fluid, I'd let you have it right now. Just on principle.:D

Z_WRECKER Feb 10, 2004 08:11 PM

so can anyone answer me ? ? ? i feel stupid :o :(

I coulda swore I mentioned this already.
You should use ATF instead of PWS fluid cause it says so in the manual! Just a small reason.
ATF has higher boiling point and other chemical properties over PWS fluid. If you've been using PWS fluid, prepare yourself for possible leaks, possible hose rupture/corrosion/failure, and/or pump failure. The severity depends on the extent of PWS in the system. I'm not saying all the above is going to happen, I'm just saying that the above has been known to happen as a direct result of using PWS fluid instead of ATF. Flushing the system might be advisable.

91zxtt Feb 10, 2004 09:54 PM

 OK, so hypothetically speaking, how would go about flushing the system?

Riz Z Speed Feb 10, 2004 10:01 PM

remove the return line for the resevoir and let that drain into a container while you have someone move the steering wheel back and forth from lock to lock. When the majority of the fluid is flushed, turn the car on. Repeat the wheel turning, quicker this time as you'll only want the car on for a couple of minutes. Then reattach the return line, fill up with ATF. Turn the wheels. Fill it up. Turn the wheels. Repeat until it's full. Then turn the car on and keep refilling.
It might help to have the front wheels off the ground.:p

did you say pump failure? Oh wait...zwrecker did experience pump failure!:p Is it fixed yet?

Riz Z Speed Feb 11, 2004 12:05 AM

Power Steering Pump failure not Fuel Pump failure! but good point. :p

emo236 Feb 11, 2004 12:11 AM

Gotcha. (see my title-that's my disclaimer for everything now)

Riz Z Speed Feb 11, 2004 12:15 AM

to make it more Z-like, why not replace the "s" with a "z"?

:p

emo236 Feb 11, 2004 12:17 AM

I LIKE IT!!

Then why didn't you change it yourself? Can you do that? Now that'd be control!

Riz Z Speed Feb 11, 2004 12:28 AM

no, cuz if I could do that you guys would have to be constantly changing your names back to what they were. Or forever be known as "Poohead", "Booger Hair", and "Dog Raper"!! :p

You know, he was still sticking to the family oriented nature of this forum by using "poohead" and "booger hair" because those are phrases you would expect to hear from young children, but man did he bolt across the line of good judgement with the "Dog raper" comment. Holy cow.
