starter or flywheel.....

my car has been having trouble to start it makes a sound like when you try to start it when its already on

that happen once but I was turning the car on and I quickly tried It again once it didn't turn on the first time so it made a grinding noise

I thought it was the starter but since it makes it at random times when it's cold or hot I think it might be the flywheel maybe it's chipped

my car is a 90 300zx non turbo 5 speed

if it's the flywheel i saw some on ebay for about 450 with a stage 3 clutch are the kits any good?

ZLover4Life 05-10-2010 08:43 AM

It's the starter (caused by not engaging fully)... and if you let it happen enough, it will damage the flywheel. Replace the starter, and while doing so, inspect the teeth on the flywheel to the best of your ability.

And quit shopping on eBay. Quality parts don't come from vendors who sell on there.

thanks
ill replace it today and ill inspect the flywheel

and ill look elsewhere for some parts

ahh good thread. i've been having the same problem. i've been sure that it's the starter, but is it really only remedied by replacement? i would think that some lube/cleaning around the starter wheel might fix it.

I usually agree with this because there is some serious crap out there but I used an XTD Stage 2 clutch kit when I installed my 5-speed and it's great. It has excellent holding power and absolutely no chatter. I installed it before the first of the year and have over 10k miles on it so far with no problems. I don't know about their flywheels but they look good and aimcoclutch has excellent feedback and they are cheap.

ZLover4Life 05-10-2010 06:47 PM

Given the size of the Z32's 5-speed transmission and how much of a bitch it can be to stab, I would not cut corners on ANYTHING that would risk me having to remove/reinstall it prematurely.

KasbeKZ - You can try cleaning it all you want... but I've never heard of anyone having success by doing so. The reason it doesn't fully engage is that the motor is getting tired, not that it's dirty or "stuck."

KasbeKZ 05-10-2010 06:58 PM

hmm. thanks much.

luis88 05-10-2010 09:11 PM

will it mess up my starter, alternator, or something in my electrical system

the reason i want to change it is because i had bought the gold one and used it for one day so im stuck with a new battery(autozone wont refund my cash) and the red one that the car has is pretty old

so i was just wondering.

i forgot to add that i will be changing my ground and power cables to 0 gauge

ZLover4Life 05-10-2010 09:19 PM

All car batteries are 12V, it'll work fine. Only difference between car batteries is size (and thus, cranking amps)... smaller batteries have trouble cranking larger engines. You should have no problem.

nismo619 05-10-2010 09:47 PM

First off the starter might be still good i have had the same problem with my starter getting stuck on the on postion. 99.99% of the time its the " STARTER SOLINOID " its a eazy fix.

Please show me where you can buy a new solenoid for our starter. On older cars, the solenoid is serviceable... not the Z32 - it's part of the starter assembly. The most you can do is tap it with a hammer and get a few weeks out of it (months at best).

KasbeKZ 05-11-2010 03:55 AM

randy, where would you get a starter from? saw NLA on courtesy. advanced has a rebuilt one though.

ZLover4Life 05-11-2010 10:11 AM

I got mine from Auto Zone... I've never had a problem with Auto Zone parts of that sort (I just wouldn't use Auto Zone for more vital components), and they come with really nice warranties, usually.

luis88 05-11-2010 10:19 AM

thats where i ordered mine from^^^

or am I missing something???

luis88 05-19-2010 09:49 PM

sooooo...... i got my new starter installed this pasted weekend and it has been starting/working great

but now this morning when i was heading to work the steering was really hard it felt like if the car was turned off:017:

i got to work and parked the car i checked the level of the power steering it was fine i think it might be the power steering pump that needs to be replaced but not sure yet i haven't fully checked it

i went to my brothers house from work and when i got there i noticed the temp was about 3/4 so i was like awwwww :009: wtf,,,, when i was there i called a friend with a tow truck to pick up my car and drop it off at his house since i had to go out of town so i haven't checked it yet and i was already disappointed with the power steering not working i just wanted to park it and work on it when i get back(Sat. or Sun)

any suggestions on the problem of the power steering and overheating

the car has been running ok since i got it(2 weeks)

KasbeKZ 05-20-2010 04:25 AM

did you put power steering fluid in it? it takes ATF

xpwarrior 05-20-2010 07:04 AM

There is a computer controlled solenoid on the power steering rack that controls the feel of the steering. Check the connection on the solenoid. Also the steering computer will go into failsafe mode if not receiving the proper signals and that will make the steering stiff. I think the steering computer is under the kick panel on the passenger side. Do you have a shop manual? It gives information on checking all this.

Is the pump making any unusual noise?

For overheating is the coolant full? Do you have a new thermostat? Temp sending unit messing up?

i found out why it was over heating it was leaking water/antifreeze from the top part of the bottom radiator hose
i changed all the hose clamps and problem fixed :023:

now the power steering problem

when i was checking out the water leak i noticed the antifreeze fell right above the belt so im thinking the power steering pulley might be slipping from the belt because of the antifreeze

im planning on changing the belt tomorrow since it does screech from time to time

luis88 05-26-2010 04:46 PM

power steering problem was from the water that was leaking from the hose to the belt its back to normal now but im still waiting for the belt to arrive so i can change it anyways
