speed chip

I saw a speed chip on a website for a 300zx. The chip gives you up to 20 % horse power. They were going for $35. I thought they went for a lot more. The site was ebay. Is this a waste of time.

Riz Z Speed 11-05-2003 04:05 PM

Yes.
Don't bother.
All it does is trick your Ecu into thinking its getting more air into the engine.
cheap trick.

chip

thank you rizzspeed, What do you think about air intakes?

Riz Z Speed 11-05-2003 08:09 PM

Air intakes are actually beneficial, especially if you don't already have one.:p
If you don't already have one, I recommend one. Personally, I don't think that a particular brand is greater than another. As long as you get a freer flowing element, you'll get the general benefit that you were aiming for.
The intake will provide hp and increase mileage. Just be sure that you reset the computer by removing the negative battery cable for a few hours.

Riz Z Speed 11-07-2003 01:19 PM

Thanks for the compliment.
To answer your question I have a red '93 Z32 2+2.

NISMO LMR 11-08-2003 11:28 AM

1990 Red Coupe, 10.5 wide tires in the back. (favorite part of the car... haha) sorry, I had to interject. peace

Datsunguy 11-15-2003 11:36 PM

hey...i've got a 81 280zx...but its got a 3.0 fuel injected strait 6...is that the kind of engine the 300zx's have? and how much hp come stock with those?

emo236 11-16-2003 03:11 AM

no the 300 has a v6 and the NA's make 222 stock and the TT's make 300 hp. while were telling everyone about which cars we have...i have a 91 TT...just got it 2 days ago...taking every chance i can to talk about it!

NISMO LMR 11-16-2003 10:44 AM

Haha emo, as every Z owner should!:p Now as for my little VG30DE engine, that is coming out in about a month, and in goes the VG30DETT... Finally! BUT, Rizz I need some help choosing an Intercooler, due to the fact that mine doesnt come with the stock dual. I talked to my mechanic buddy today at church, he told me it wouldnt be any problem for him to do one week when hes off work. So one, I will need the intercooler, two, hard pipe kit so I can mount the BOV's off to the side of the fascia, so I can get that LOUD "hhhhiiiiiiisssssss" sound that only a twin blow-off valve set-up can make, haha. Also, 298hp is the stock number for this JDM engine, what increase can I expect from the intercooler and hard pipe kit? Shoot me back soon! Or IM me at Nismo LMR. peace:p

Riz Z Speed 11-16-2003 06:28 PM

Actually, since Datsunguy didn't specify...

The first generation (Z31) had *V6'sas well. The second generation 300zx's (Z32) had V6's. With both generations having N/A and Turbo variants.
http://www.overboost.com/obs/search....ch_button.y=15
This site'll give you an idea of the type of intercoolers you can get for front mount purposes. The hard intercooler pipes are there as well.
http://store.yahoo.com/sgpracing-sto...ercoolers.html
Here's another with the same HKS gear and also the intake/boost hard pipes as well.
http://www.stillen.com/sportscars.asp?cat=2&subcat=157
And last but not least, if you'd like to maintain the original dual IC look, there's always the Stillen brand.:rolleyes: I've seen a write up on these and they look really good.
As far as hp numbers goes, Stillen says you'll get an increase of about 10 hp at the wheels. So that would be a sizeable increase for just changing that. Granted it's not the best $-hp ratio, but it works. This is their stage 7 upgrade in their 18 step chart.

1=Hi-flow Intake,
2=Exhaust,
3=computer,
4=pulley,
5=ignition upgrade,
6=flywheel,
7=intercooler,
8=boost controller,
9=racepipes,
10=cam gears,
11=injectors,
12=turbo upgrade,
13=exhaust manifolds,
14=NO Injection,
15=cams,
16=E.H.Plenums,
17=Pistons,
18=connecting rods

Again, this is Stillens' chart. It would be a good idea, imo, to do whatever part of these you can afford to do (or wait to do) with the engine out of the car. Especially the latter steps that involve the bottom end. Although by no means are you to follow these in this order. This just shows you what all ultimately you could do to your engine to get the most from it. Many of these steps should probably be done at the same time for just convienience. Like the cams and camgears, since you'll have that all apart at the same time. The E.H.Plenums and injectors, since you have to remove the plenum anyway to get the injectors. Pistons and connecting rods since they connect to each other. The whole exhaust at once would be nice as well, from the manifolds back.
Anything else homey?:)

p.s. umm...I just noticed that not included in 'Stillens upgrade chart' that they did not include a clutch or a lightened driveshaft. Which I found weird seeing as the clutch is very important seeing as it is the vital link between your engine and transmission. As far as the driveshaft goes, less rotational mass. We all know what it does so no need for further explanations.:D

^*Correction. I originally stated that Z31's had I6's. Only very limited production JDM versions in the '84 model year had the I6's. All stateside Z31's came equipped with the VG30E/T V6's. Thanks to DRMX for the correction.
