single inlet,outlet intercooler setup

Hi everyone. I've been searching in various forums with no luck. I want to know if an intercooler with a single inlet and single outlet can be used on a z32 300zx? I have a large core fmic that I want to install on a friend's car but on the twin turbo Zs each bank of the motor is seperate from the other. I'm very good with fabrication so I'm simply asking is it possible and how would I go about setting it up?

Welcome to ZDriver!

We actually have an INTERCOOLER sticky thread w/ tons of info:

https://www.zdriver.com/forums/300zx-z32-tech-tips-273/intercooler-writeup-long-19694/

and lots of other threads talking about a FMIC by searching for the word "INTERCOOLER" or "FMIC"

This one has important info... FMIC is not the way to go on a Z32... unless you are doing it for "rice status" more than performance.

Thanx for the welcome. First off I goin to have to disagree with you on a fmic being "ricey". They are more efficient in 95% of applications. I just think in this particular case it may fall amongst the 5%. I really only want a couple questions answered. 1) Will anything be gained using 12x24x3 fmic core over the STOCK smics? 2) Will the vehicle suffer any kind of damage while using the single inlet/outlet fmic with the Z? I understand these vehicles use crossflow intake manifolds but I want the input of someone that has actual numbers or experience pertaining to an intercooler setup where the crossflow intake is no longer utilized. Thanx.

how are you going to use a single in single out core on a twin turbo twin intake car? your going to loose performance crossing flows like that. ALL the fast Z32's upgrade their sidemounts cause with the twin throttle body design and small amount of room thats what works best. stick with it. get some stillens or ash spec. front mounts work on single turbo single intake cars 100 percent better but not here. we have very different complex cars. the Z is different, stay away or just get rid of the Z cause you will barely get any gain and more than likely create and overheating problem. welcome to the forum btw

You want actual numbers, but make up statistics? lol

By the way, the fastest 300ZX's all have side mount intercoolers. So do Ferraris and Porsches... (though for different reasons, it is a clear demonstration that front mount intercoolers are not necessary).

And yes, they are ricey.

Gregg Dupree uses SMICs on his Z. the one that runs in the 9s with full factory interior. FMICs on a z32 are a total waste of time, and have the potential to create problems. ricers not concerned with performance put FMICs on z32s. people looking for performance stick with SMICs.
