protective coating on back window

The rear windshield of my Z looks all "milky" when i am looking OUT of the car, but when im looking into it it looks fine. The manual says that if i remove the protective coating it could cause damage to the windshield? is this true, the coating is coming off in 2 places, not big holes but their there, will it really be a bad thing to remove the coating in its entirety?

Thanks.

What coating? Do you mean after-market tint? If you pull it off, you could pull off the defroster heating elements.
