oil filter & K&N typhoon

Is there a good aftermaket oil filter? Or Should I use dealer oil filter.

Can anyone tell me if K&N makes a cold intake for 1990 300zx 2+2. I went to the website, no luck. I just think it is hard to believe they not have it on the website.

The K&N oil filter is pretty good, but OEM will suit you fine as well. About the intake. K&N does make an intake for your car. Check this out:

emo... Thanks for the 411 :)

OEM filter is the best oil filter for the car. DO NOT get any wal mart or k mart brand oil filter!! They are absolute SH!T!!
K&N filtercharger is what I have in my 2+2. So they do make it. I only wish I had paid that ebay price though!:(

emo236 Jan 26, 2004 07:50 AM

Yea, the K&N filterchargers are a pretty good deal on ebay. Also, how about K&N oil filters...they may cost a little more, but they are pretty good. Whatever you do, don't get fram! Walmart filters were ranked higher than theirs!! And here's how to install the K&N intake if you choose to go that route.

i've been using fram oil filter on my car...:( why is it so bad? hit me up with this, i figure there shouldn't be much difference in an oil filter, and which one should i go with

91zxtt Jan 26, 2004 09:51 AM

Yeah, what's the deal with FRAM. I've been using them on my Z's for 9 years. I've been told to avoid the K&N oil filters by a local mechanic, but I really don't know him from Adam, so I wasn't really listening. Do you have some support to your advise?

 I was just about to change my oil and use another Fram filter. Now I know. The one site raves about K&N. The other 2 haven't tested it yet.

Riz Z Speed Jan 26, 2004 03:02 PM

Considering Fram uses "CARDBOARD" in their filters, I would consider them bad. Read over those comparisons, they provide a great amount of information.

thanks emo for that link, that's the link I was going to post.:D

Glad I could save you all from letting little bits of cardboard and paper into your motor. You'll find the K&N easier to install and remove since it has the tightening bolt on the bottom of it.

Z_WRECKER Jan 26, 2004 09:30 PM

where can you get those k&n, and what kind of oil do you guys use.... i know you guys prolly use something thicker than an N/A bc of the turbos,,,,great work emo

emo236 Jan 26, 2004 09:34 PM

You can get the K&N at any autozone or kragen or any place like that. I use mobil one synthetic. The K&N is more expensive than the fram have you. Just to let you know.

Z_WRECKER Jan 26, 2004 09:36 PM

yeah i figured that... i use 10-40 on my Z. i just never gave it too much tought about the oil filter, but sure will from now on thanx man. if there is one thing i don't mind spending my money on is my girl and my car, and my buddies of course

emo236 Jan 26, 2004 11:18 PM

Might as well spend a little now and save a lot later.

Z_WRECKER Jan 27, 2004 11:16 AM

for sure man... i had no idea fram was made out of carton....damn
thanx emo

n_2_fairladyz Jan 28, 2004 04:49 AM

thanks again emo for the links. To bad we can't get discount from K&N. :( Could we work out a deal with K&N, if you are member of ZDriver? Something to make you go HUmmmm.

emo236 Jan 28, 2004 07:30 AM

They're not that bad, just more expensive than the frams. But I guess a K&N, mobil one....it adds up kinda. It should run you around $30 (give or take) for an oil change.

Z_WRECKER Jan 28, 2004 09:20 AM

unless you are changing the spark plugs too....hahahahah ( emo gets it)

would i be better off buyiing a adapter ring and filter like the K&n? or buying A FULL INTAKE? OR BUYING THE RING AND FILTER, AND ALSO BUYING THE 50 DOLLAR ALUMINUM INTAKE TUBES AND SILICON HOSES OFF OF EBAY? PERFORMANCE AND CASH WISE

Riz Z Speed Jul 1, 2004 11:35 PM

thats up to you. If you like the aluminum intake tubes go get em. They're only cosmetic and don't provide any performance benefit.
As for the filter itself, that's an easier one. Jim wolfe, stillen or k&n are top notch. I'd stay away from the foam filters. Impossible to clean. The jim wolfe is basically a K&n with a velocity ring. The stillen is basically a rebadged jim wolfe + $.

Have you guys seen the commercials for the FRAM Air Hog? Are these things just cheap knockoffs of a K&N?

emo236 Jul 2, 2004 09:24 AM

It's Fram's shot at competition for K&N. stupid in my opinion. I won't touch it.

91zxtt Jul 2, 2004 10:18 AM

Napa has a new oil filter out now. It's supposed to decrease the turbulence inside the oil filter. Michael Waltrip and Dale Earnhardt Jr. are in the commerical. I like those guys, but I don't know how much they know about oil filters. Anyone have an opinion on these new oil filters? The theory behind it seems to make sense, but it also depends on what they use for filter media.
