gas mileage

ok, i want to know if something is wrong with my car. my car is a 1990 na, 105k miles, and is in good condition and it runs well. i recently replaced the radiator, timing belt and the other belts and installed new spark plugs. the only mod i have on my car is a k&n filter. so heres what's been bothering me. I think my car wastes too much gas and maybe something might be wrong with it. on a full tank (btw, i always premium gas only) i get about 140-160 miles in the city. so if you have a car that is in similar conditions as mine and wastes the same amount of gas please let me know, so i know that nothing is wrong with it. Also, sometimes when i turn on my car there is a strong smell of gasoline. First, i thought this was normal because the car would be cold, but then i would be driving around for a while (20-30 min) and i would turn it off for like 15 min and then when i turned it back on it would smell like gas. any help would be appreciated. thankx.

here's a thread where we discussed fuel mileage:

ditto on the fuel leak tho. You might check all of your fuel line connections.

check your coils. make sure they are getting good grounds. I had the similar problem with one and they where notburning all teh fuel needed so it was wasting too much gas and not giving me full power.

My main gas line had a tear in it (under the Plenum Cover) and gas was puddling in between my plenums. Check it out everything that people mentioned and report back to us.

What plugs did you install. Where do you have your timing set?

I have 3 sand bags in the back of my car, so my mileage has decreased a bit. I get about 180-190 with them in. Without I imagine around 200+. I kinda have heavy foot though, thamn I need to learn how to accelerate at a slower pace.

Yah, thank god I'm N/A. My mileage wouldn't even break a 100 per tank if I had a TT.

My word guys, you have to learn that there is more than 1 throttle position on these cars. I get 280-320 miles per tank with a combination of highway and city driving.

dont/didnt know what those meant
sand bags are for people who have rear wheel drive cars and drive in the snow. more weight for the tires...imo it doesnt help much

i drive moderately almost all the time, but it is cold and snowing so i leave the car on longer to warm up and spin out as well

I put 'em in the back of my datsun p/u with the 327 chevy, once in a while, so that I could get the front wheels off the ground on a launch.

The problem is not just fuel leak. If you're only getting 180 miles per tank,....If it was just a fuel leak and you drive like a sane person , then you'd likely be leaking 5 gallons of gas per tank. That's not realistic. The problem is tied to the right foot, or something mechanical or electronic.
