Fuel Ecnomy vs Octane Rating
Fuel Ecnomy vs Octane Rating
Ok i know we have discussed the issue of gas milage before and I know around what point I normally get for gas milage. NORMALLY, I get about 220 to 240 miles on a full tank of gas on 93 octane. Today however, i went to the 300zx nationals drag race event and we stopped off in Aniston, AL. There at the pump they sold 100 octane as well as the regular three grades of gas. Being that I ve always wanted to up the octane to see what it would do I filled my tank up with it. At nearly 3.99 a gallon I put in 9 gallons for about 38.00 total. So far I ve burned 1/2 a tank of gas in one day and made 8 quarter miles drag runs in the mid 15 sec range. But what confuses the heck out of me is that I have put over 178 miles on my car while only burnin 1/2 a tank? I do know that my timing is advanced a bit, but would it really make that big of a difference by putting in 100 octane?? I m impressed so far..and deoending on the long term costs of filling up every 220 miles versus about 350 at this rate, i wonder if the 3.99 is worth it??
Has any one got anythin to add to my comment or is this a fluke? A good fluke at that

I once heard that for every degree you advance the timing that you'll gain 1 mpg. I have no support whatsoever to that claim, but someone told me that once. Obviously this could only hold true to a point. You'll kill the motor if you take it too far.
