Exhaust Smoke

Usually when im accelerating into 2nd gear, you can see smoke from the exhaust. its not blue. you can often smell it inside the car. on high revs smoke also comes out. so im wondering if this is normal ? i had asked a friend about it, and he suggested it get re-tuned or have the ecu re-checked, but im not sure. any idea ? thanks.

How many miles are on z motor? Higher rpm smoke is usually a sign of compression blow-by past the rings. This blow-by stirs up the oil in the crankcase which is carried up thru the pcv valves and back thru the intake where it burns during combustion. This is normally a sign that your motor is getting worn out and it will get progressively worse. Keeping fresh oil in the motor and maybe running a heavier weight oil will help for a while.

One of the tricks to eliminate some of this smoke is to run an oil "catch can". You run the lines from the pcv valve to the catch can instead of back thru the intake.

I wouldn't say it doesn't have much left. I was trying to say what one of the causes of high rpm smoke is. And a possible cure. It's not like it'll just cut out on you. It's more like a gradual thing. It'll start to smoke more and more over time. 146k miles is pretty low actually, but you never know how it's been maintained.

If the blow-by is the cause of the smoke, doing a simple compression test would confirm or deny the theory. Blow-by is a sign that your piston rings/pistons and cylinders walls are getting worn which would result in low compression numbers.

I'm sure there are other people with ideas too.........
