crank angle sensor
has any one had to replace the crank angle sensor on their z? if so how much was the part and where did you get it? I had a guy tell me $398 for the part plus $88 an hour for install.

You went to the dealer, didn't you? Don't go to the dealer unless you have a hook up there. They'll leave you walking funny, if you know what I mean.

try ebay, or maybe a junk yard. i usually go to a dealer bc i've owned 3 z's and i have given them more business than anyone else, so i get a little discount+ they started carying nismo stuff so i gotta get on that

What makes you think you need a new crank angle sensor? I've been wondering if mine was possibly faulty. Let me know. Also, those are very easy to install. All you have to do is remove the intake tube, disconnect the plug and remove 3 bolts. You just make sure that you install it in the same position. The way you adjust the timing is to turn the crank angle sensor. Don't pay some retard $88/hour to do a job you could do in 20 minutes.

symptoms
it turns over normally but wont start. i was told it might be the crank angle sensor by the guys, so what do you think? are there any aftermarket places that sell crank sensors for the z?
|
I've never even a factory one advertised, let alone anything aftermarket. Go to www.zhome.com. There's a whole 'How to..." section for the Z32. It tells you how to perform ECU diagnostics. The crank angle sensor is one of many items you can check. Good luck.

check the for sale section. I do believe someone was parting out a Z. See how much he'll sell you his CAS for.

I found some more info on the CAS.
CAS - Crank Angle Sensor Known in the service manual as the CMPS - Camshaft Position Sensor. The CMPS monitors engine speed & piston position to send the data to the ECU. It's basically a disc with 360 slits cut in it around the perimeter & 6 slits cut to mark the 120 degree positions. It uses photodiodes to transmit light through the slits while rotating to determine speed & angle. www.nhtsa.dot.gov Service Bulletin #: FC0004794 Date of Bulletin: Jan. '91 Model: 300ZX Year: 1990 Summary: Excessive initial timing advance, index notch on camshaft damaged, R/R crank angle sensor, camshaft and cylinder head--1990-91 300ZX CM The problem was that the left cylinder head of a certain production # range of early Z cars ('90) was mis-machined. This caused the CAS to be thrown off in its readings of cam timing, so the symptoms are usually very sluggish performance or detonation. Eventually the readings of the CAS stray so far (for reasons unknown to me) that the symptoms show up when the cars have some mileage on them. I've heard of some having this problem and they replaced the CAS, but the CAS was expected to fail again, because the root of the problem is the badly machined left cylinder head. |
Was this only on the '90's?

yep.
very early 90's |
