The correct answer to Datsunguy's question would have been what ZXBoy said...
"1st gen had v-6's also, just sohc instead of dohc"

Z31's had the VG30E or VG30ET, both SOHC V-6 engines, which produced 160/200hp respectively. (165/205hp for 88-89 models)

Some, if not all of the '84 Z31's had inline 6's. When I purchased my '85 Z31, I had looked at several 84's as well. I remember them having inline 6's. My '85 had a V6.

Are you talking about a JDM Z31? That may be a possibility, but was never the case in the states. All US spec Z31's had VG30 blocks. You may have seen a Z31 engine swap or a JDM import. Please show any proof you have of a factory inline 6.

I don't have any proof besides my word. I saw one in '94 when I was looking for a newer car. It was an ugly, light blue '84 Datsun 300zx with an inline 6. The owner was a real piece of work, so needless to say I didn't buy it. If it was a JDM import, I didn't know about it, and I'm sure the owner had no clue either. The car was in Fremont, CA. The only reason I remember it was because I though all of the Z31's had V6's. I was shocked when I popped open the hood and saw that IL 6 sittin' in there.

thanks for the correction. I obviously was typing to fast and left that part out.:p
But you are correct, both generations have V6's.

I'll go back and correct my post.

I'll even give you credit for the correction.:)

I believe that you saw what you did. I had an 87 and an 84 parts car, so I'm speaking from experience as well. The chance of an imported Z31 in CA is better than most places. I was going off of your "Some, if not all of the '84 Z31's had inline 6's" comment.

My main point was about rizzspeed's thought that all Z31's had inline-6 engines. I read his post a few times to be sure I didn't misunderstand, if I have somewhere, I apologize. I don't want to give the impression i'm flaming anyone, just a simple correction.

Gotta run back to the photo lab, I'm developing some nice B&W photos of my Z32:D

The previous motor may have been blown and he may have swapped in a 280zx motor.

Well, when I think about it, I have only seen under the hoss of 1 '84 Z. So, to me, all of them had it. My statement was true, but only in my world. :D What EMO stated makes much more sense. The guy selling it was a complete twit. I don't know how common it was to import JDM Spec cars back then.
