Best way to clean corrosion / Plenum question.
As some of you know by now I did the JDM swap and my injector conections, the ones on the actual connectors are so corroded its hard to get a reading with the volt meter and the harnesses do not pick up the signal in at least two of them.
Im going to swap out the rails with my new style ones soon but Id like to get the motor running on all cylinders, as is, and right now its an injector issue with the first two (left right) cylinders. Second part is the plenum, i noticed when I dropped the new style injector into the old rail theres not really enough clearance to get the connector on. Im assuming the 93+ plenum addressed this issue and the fitment is better. Is that a right assumption to make? |
Ive used contact cleaner, more then enough, im looking for something commercial.
Ive even tried scraping the corrosion off. |
for scraping off the old pins in the injectors, it's not so much the chemical but the tool. i've spent about an hour scraping all mine with a pick before. if you can't get a reading on them, they're probably bad. if you can't stick the pins in there with some pressure and scrape them around and get the same reading every time, they're bad. i had a bad one that would give a different reading every single time i touched the leads to it.
you didn't seriously drop new style injectors into the old style rail did you? not sure if you know this, but they don't fit without an adapter. the #1 injector requires grinding of the old style plenum. i would suggest just using your other plenum. it has to come off anyway to grind it, unless you want to make a massive mess of your engine. cleaning it will be more trouble than swapping the plenums. |
IT WAS AN HONEST MISTAKE THAT I FIXED.
It slipped my mind that the rails were different. I have a second plenum, off the motor already. I can get a reading from the injector but i have to kind of dig the meter pins into the lowest part of the prongs in the injector. and its not reading on top and wont read from a connector. Its not the connector either because ive tested it using known working connectors. They only have 60 k on them so I dont see why they would be bad, but i know its just something that can fail at any time. Im going to start scraping this week and see what happens. |
I stole a couple of my wife's emery boards to clean the pins on my injectors. I trimmed the edges of the end of the board so I could work it back and forth across the pins. Trim back to new board when necessary. Worked great and don't forget the dielectric grease when putting the connectors back on.

i also have used a small file
injectors can certainly go out after 60k. i just had a brand new one go out after less than 20. i believe zlover had one go out after less than 5k. old style injectors are not holding up for shit to this ethanol. it's a wonder you see z's on the road with owners that don't care to look this info up. |

everybody runs premium gas. most places have ethanol in premium though. 10% here in VA. the only gas i could possibly find without ethanol is regular.

do the rewire so they aren't getting current all the time... or just swap to the new style..
|
still should do the re-wire when you put the new style in.
|
the re wire?
|
yeah. i'll link you tonight. it cuts the constant power from the ECU. but actually, if you're running your original ECU and wiring harness that came with the later style injectors, you won't need it.
|
All i did was splice the old style connectors to my 93 harness. Still running the 93 computer as well.
