Alternator
 

So, I know the alternator dies rather frequently in the Z and mine has been acting up lately, I was just wondering if anyone knows of where to get a good rebuilt one for "cheap"

I tired most of the links on Riz's Link page also a few other auto parts places, Best I could find (name brand) was the following:

I would be hesitant to go cheap on the alternator as most often, with rotating electrical parts (alternators, starters) you get what you pay for. When mine goes out, I believe a new unit will be the only way to go. I have never had much luck out of remans...

New Alternators for less than the cost of 2 Rebuilt ones. Anyway, a good electric motor company that actually stamps their name on it should put together good rebuilds, I mean, its a pretty simple unit consisting of a Stator, a Rotor and a couple bearings, a diode pack, and housing.

Hitachi
Bosch
Denso

Just to name a few. I think new ones cost about $400+

FWIW I work in the industry and have seen enough vendors with defect rates that exceed 10% (including Bosch & Denso) that I will stick with new only for my own car. The initial savings might seem great until sitting on the side of the road at 2 am with a dead battery resulting from a faulty alternator. Just my $0.02 though, to each his own :-)

You can also look into local places that rebuild starters & alternators. Cost might be as little as 25% of retail new/rebuilt.

I have had very good luck in the past with local rebuilders. Granted the last time I had one done was several years ago and it was a Delco-Remy unit, but most of these types of shops do a great job and pretty much survive off of rebuilding industrial electric motors etc. Rebuilding an automotive unit is a walk in the park for a lot of them - of course the difficulty is finding a shop that specializes in this type of thing.
