AIV solenoid

Ok, in front of the battery there are two identical solenoids. One is the AIV and the other is the EGR solenoid. Which is which? I am removing the AIV system and already have the stuff under the fenderwells removed. I just need to remove the AIV solenoid and the rest of the vacuum lines.

The selenoid in front of your battery should be the EGR control selenoid. The exact same in front of the brake booster shoud be the AIV selenoid. The ones mounted on either side of the intake side brakets are the boost control selenoids.

I see in the FSM where there are supposed to be 2 but I don't seem to have the PRVR system so my AIV selenoid is in its place on the drivers side.

See my FSM shows that the one closest to the battery is the EGR and the other is the AIV. But the hoses that come from the AIV units under the fenderwells lead to the said "EGR Solenoid". That solenoid is also connected to the balance tube, which I read is what the AIV solenoid is supposed to be hooked up to. I'm confused Maybe something is hooked up wrong. I looked at tt.net for answers and I have read of them being in both positions.

The EGR solenoid is closest to the battery. The AIV sits in front of it. The AIV has a vacuum line running to the balance tube. The EGR solenoid does not. The PRVR is in front of the brake booster.

Maybe it's different in '93, but I wouldn't think so.

For some unexplained reason I only have a total of four selenoids. EGR, AIV, Boost Cut Left/Right. Since I just pulled the engine I know theres not one hiding anywhere. Strange this are afoot in these cars.

That's what's confusing me. The one closest to the battery is connected to the balance tube and also has a "T" with a hose going to each fenderwell.

Actually, you're right. Mine was setup opposite the FSM. The AIV was closest to the battery. The 3 lines on the AIV run 1) to the balance, 2) to the 'T' in line with one of the EGR lines and 3) to the AIV's in the fenderwells.

Ok, everything should be in order now. AIV is removed and I moved the EGR solenoid to where the FSM said it should be. Here is a pic of the junk that was removed and a pic of my engine bay afterwards.

Here it is before. I am leaving my cruise control off as well. Looks cleaner.

Are you saying that you just pulled out the AIV components? What else did you have to do?
Cheers

Yes, here is a writeup I followed. You need to plug the holes in your cats after you remove the units under the fenderwells. I got my plugs from Yugobernie on tt.net. http://www.twinturbo.net/net/viewmsg...&msg_id=931202

Ah ha, THAT's what I was askin'.
You have to change out the ECU?. That makes it more than just simply junking the AIV's.
Cheers

I have the Z1 ECU upgrade..are there any legal complications with this mod?? I know most emission shops wont think to look for that to see if its hooked up. With the ECU upgrade and proper maintanence my car passed with flyin colors. I am all for eliminatin stuff thats not needed...stuff like this.

In order for this to work you must have an ECU upgrade. Otherwise you won't pass emissions. Any aftermarket ECUs, that I know of, do not retain the AIV functions. If you want to, you can leave the units under the fenderwells and just remove the AIV solenoid and hoses in the engine bay. That way it would look like they are still hooked up and your engine bay would still look cleaner. You would have to plug the hose going from the AIV assemblies to the solenoid.
