1990 300ZX Driveshaft manual vs auto
 

As with many people here the carrier bearing on my drive shaft has failed and needs to be replaced. My car has a manual transmission and is a 2+2 model and I found a person that exact same donor car with an automatic transmission. I know that one of the drive shafts is longer than the other as a whole, but that one of the two sections of the drive shaft is the exact same length on both. My question is, is the section that is the identical length the section that has the carrier bearing or the other section. I have already pulled the donor drive shaft, but haven't pulled mine off yet and just want to know before I get under there is I am going to be able to just swap out the whole section or if I am going to have to try to wrestle the carrier bearing off and risk damaging it.

Yes I would LOVE to switch to a single section driveshaft! But, I have this already and would like to make this the first option in the interest of saving money since this whole driveshaft only cost me $50 and is in great shape.

I don't know the answer to your question, but you might be able to answer it yourself faster (and more effectively) by comparing it since you've got the other driveshaft handy. Don't mean to sound like a dick, but it might take days for someone who knows the answer to reply, if someone does, as opposed to about half an hour to jack up the car and all that.

Yeah that's what I am doing as we speak, just thought there was an outside shot someone would have an answer for me before I got around to the switch this weekend. I will post the answer in a few minutes once I have mine pulled off.

So I pulled the driveshaft of my manual transmission 2+2 and it turns out that the rear section of the driveshaft of both are the same length. Sadly the Carrier Bearing is attached to the front section of the drive shaft which is much longer on the manual transmission than on the automatic. So I had to remove the Carrier Bearing from the front section of the drive shaft and reinstall it onto mine then reassemble the driveshaft sections and put it all back in. After a few hours of work it is running just fine with no more knocking from the driveshaft!
