z32 tt year variations

i know for a fact ive seen a thread about this somewhere on the net, but i have not been successful digging it up, so please excuse me if it is somewhere obvious on this website.

im in the market for a tt z32, and i know over the years they evolved slightly.

im lookin for a bone stocker that i can baby till stuff just starts going wrong and then upgrade as i go.

my concerns are about problems that were fixed over the years/modifications/upgrades, such as, the injectors, brake calipers/master cylinder, the 8 vs 16 bit ecu, window regulators, hydraulic vs electric hicas, VVT, etc. and if these changes are enough to worry about, that i should not buy a 89-90 because of it, or if those problems are negligible, and when the time comes id be upgrading all of it anyway.

im lookin for the best bang for my buck regarding reliability, since it will be my daily driver for the next 5 years at least. id like to keep it stock for as long as possible and when things do start going wrong, id like to put more money into making it a monster, as opposed to replacing window regulators, etc.

basically, im asking what year is the bestest evar? ..... n.n

Everything that you mentioned as a problem is easily replaceable, and since there are VASTLY more 90's than any other year, I've always found it easier to buy a 90 and change the things I want/need to change. There is no real problem with the 90 that can't be overcome in the course of typical modifications (all ECU upgrades are 16-bit, all [worthwhile] injector upgrades are pintle-less [though 300Degree rails are required to drop them into early-style lower plenums], etc).

And some of the things you mentioned aren't even problems...

in reference to the question: '90 tt's really don't have that much to worry about. if you're looking at n/a's, they've got the brake problem that is nice to avoid, but still overcome-able. i often see people on forums saying the '95 is the very best year, but it's by a very small margin. i wouldn't worry about it. you're much better suited to just look for a car that's complete, stock, well maintained, well priced, low mileage, ext... rather than spending any extra or missing any good cars just because you're looking for a '95.

BINGO. Maintenance > Model Year

I own 90's exclusively... no airbags to weigh the car down, no OBDII (or lack of VTC) of the 96, and I can add all of the other alterations that I desire.

As for things I mentioned that aren't real problems: there is no evidence that the electronic HICAS is superior to the hydraulic HICAS, and the master cylinders never changed. (As far as the brakes go, the NA's in 1990 had thinner rotors that were more prone to warping, and the caliper material was changed a few years into production to aide in heat dissipation, but there have been no problems with the earlier calipers.)
