Whats a fare price for an engine swap?

I have a 93 300zx non-turbo with 156,xxx miles on it.
I called one place and they said 4500 new engine swap. Is that fare for the labor and all?

I once did the NA swap myself, really easy to pull the engine. Cost me 2k for JDM Motor and parts. They are asking a bit much. If you need more help let me know.

a fare is what you pay to ride on a bus. Fair is a price that is acceptable to buyer and seller.

I'm planning on doing it myself with help from a friend but is there anything I need to buy on the side, motor mounts, hoses?

Also did you sawp the tranny as well or just the engine, cause I found both with about 45k on them for about 1600.

THanks.

Great price,if i were you i would grab that engine and trans, and if you're not doing it yourself, you can choose where you want to have it installed. Installation should not be more than $450-$600. Good luck!

Just the motor, if the trans is good no need to do it. Both the NA and TT trans are the same inside. The only difference is the bellhousin size. You can mount a NA trans to a TT motor using an upgraded NA clutch or grind the bellhousing out to fit TT Clutch and flywheel. Most motor mounts get broken when you pull the engine, so it's recommended that you replace them. Don't use polyurathean mount as it will vibrate the car quite a bit. At a minimual you need to do the water pump, rear main seal, and timming belt. Here is what I recommend.

Timming Belt Kit (water pump, belts, bearings)
Rear Main seal
Oil Pan Gasket
Resurface Flywheel(if installing new clutch)
New EFI Harness
All performance items such as Header, ERG delete, UD pulley and etc should be install while the motor is out.

I would run regular oil for the first 1-300 miles. There are alot of stuff that needes to get filter out first.

I had found a genius mechanic who would look at my Z31 and see a personal challenge, no matter how small or large the problem. He really understood cars - all of them. So I found a good Z31 motor at a recycler, bought it and had it delivered to his house. I dropped off my Z and in 2 days he called me to tell me that my Z had a "new" motor and was running! Happy day. We did the final tuning that night and I drove it home. Total cost for mechanic: $800. All possible because he was a great mechanic - not just into cars and motors for the money. Guys like that are hard to find but worth the search
