Short throw shifter

hey guys...for Christmas i got a stillen short throw shifter for my Z...since i haven't been driving and i've been really lazy, i haven't tried installing it. i know you have to unhook the shifter linkage on your tranny, and i got the replacement bushings yo go allong with it. i was just wondering has anyone here done it, and has any words of advice before i start tomorrow... also how long did it take you, bc it doesn't seem like something that should take too long. and also if you have any pointers i would really appreciate it. thanx fellow Z-ers:D

Z_WRECKER Feb 2, 2004 09:43 PM

oh yeah if anyone does have it, how much did it reduce the throw, bc Z gears seem pretty close ratioed ( i am not sure if thats a word, but you guys know what i mean) thanx

I haven't done it yet, but it shouldn't be that hard. I have the Top Speed shifter from Courtesy Z still in the box. It's supposed to reduce the throw by 40%.

Riz Z Speed Feb 3, 2004 10:18 AM

Don't put it in backwards! LOL
It'll reduce the throws not the gear ratios. I would've figured you'd know that. :D J/k It's only supposed to reduce the distance that you move your arm.

The only thing would be just be careful that you don't scratch anything up when you remove and reassemble all the pieces. Remember how stuff goes back together. If it's the first time you're removing the shifter, be patient with it. I dunno if you're going to reuse it. If you are, use a towel or shop rag folded over many time to protect the shifter when you use a large wrench to remove it. Everything else should be easy.

Z_WRECKER Feb 3, 2004 12:30 PM

well yeah Rizz...thats what i ment... there is no way in the world it could reduce the gear ratios.... :D but it's ok you can make fun of me bc i wasn't born here.:D

anyway i wasn't aware that you are gonna be using a large wrench to take it off anyway ????

emo236 Feb 3, 2004 12:33 PM

Yes, you will...probably somethign like a plumber's wrench. The shift knob is on glued on there with a strong adhesive compound within the threads. Fold over a towel many times and put it over the knob . Give the wrench a good push or two to break the compound. The knob should unscrew fairly easily after that.

So, are you saying that opening the U.S. borders isn't such a bad thing after all? :D

Z_WRECKER Feb 3, 2004 09:04 PM

you guys are just funny... i had no problem getting the know off ( i guess some of us are just a little bit stronger :) ) and i will do the rest tomorrow since i was wiring an electrical radiator, and finishing up the interior...thannx guy i'll let you know how it went

Z_WRECKER Feb 3, 2004 09:06 PM

and no opening borders wasn't bad idea....after all how do you think you grandparents and their parents got here ;)

emo236 Feb 3, 2004 09:40 PM

Ok, first of all theres a post in the off topic forum on opening the borders, but it's stupid. Also, I'm glad it's going well for you wrecker. Are you changing the knob?

91zxtt Feb 3, 2004 09:57 PM

OK, I have to ask,.. Wrecker, what's an electrical radiator? Are you not getting enough sleep again? ;) Apparently EMO has become the Off Topic Police.

emo236 Feb 3, 2004 09:59 PM

well, it seems to be Rizz's pet peeve and we decided that we need to stay on topic, so I'm jsut trying to help out. It kinda looks bad for the forum when someone comes in loooking for info and goes to a post that is just all over the place. And yea, I was wondering about that too. I assumed he meant electric fan, but who knows.

91zxtt Feb 3, 2004 10:05 PM

Fair enough. Can we start calling you Rizz Jr.? How 'bout Baby Rizz? I kinda like the sound of that last one. It just kinda rolls off the tongue. Say it with me...Baby Rizz. I like it.

emo236 Feb 3, 2004 10:07 PM

Bite me.

91zxtt Feb 3, 2004 10:15 PM

LMAO!! I knew it would catch on.

Why don't I find this funny?

91zxtt Feb 4, 2004 10:53 AM

I was laughing at the bite me part. Different sense of humor I guess.

Z_WRECKER Feb 4, 2004 12:37 PM

yes i haven't been sleeping much lately. i meant to say electric fan not radiator...thanx for catching that... it would be cool to have an electric radiator. like it could be special coating on the inside of the engine that remains the sam e temp no matter what, so your car never has to warm up, and if you run the hell out of it engine still stays the same temp. ( copywright pending :)) so Emo is Baby Rizz now??? :D

emo236 Feb 4, 2004 02:18 PM

No I'm not baby Rizz. I'm very different than Rizz, and just b/c I made sure we stayed on subject a few times doesn't make me a padiwon or anything. I'm still Emo. And keep dreaming Zwrecker...maybe it'll get you somewhere someday...not with the electric radiator though. But maybe in your TT swap it will!:D

Z_WRECKER Feb 4, 2004 03:42 PM

no hard feelings Emo. you know i'll be asking you all kinds of questions when it's time for the heart transplant....and as far as the electric fan...well the fan was a pusher, which meant you put it in front of the radiator, but it wasn't until i hooked it up, wired it to the ignition and batery and with a nice inline fuse cable, hid all the wires and junk....anyway it wasn't until i did all that and was done that i read the instructions :D so i have to take it off, switch the blades around and then it will be ok.... i haven't gotten to my shifter but i will post a picture of my non-existant interior :D

91zxtt Feb 4, 2004 04:11 PM

Ugh, i can't believe you put the fan on backwards, then actually told us about it. Your stock is plummeting.

Z_WRECKER Feb 4, 2004 05:03 PM

no i put it on right....it was just programmed as a pusher fan not like a stock puller kind :)

Z_WRECKER Feb 4, 2004 05:04 PM

hell who am i kidding i should have read the directions first :D i've said that one too many times
