shifter bushings

ok so the shifter is sloppy and I cant figure out how to get to the bushings to change them. I pulled the trim and there was a plate around the shifter with four bolts does that need to come off to get to them? If anyone could tell me how to change them i would greatly appreciate it.

Yes, the plate needs to come off (sorry, but duh). Or you can do it from underneath the car. The bushings you're replacing connect your shifter to the trans linkage... you have to be able to get to the trans linkage (which is in the trans well, above and to the rear of the trans).

think it's glued correct? i've never had it off, but if memory serves, i remember seeing glue around the edges.

to change the bushings, you just take the one bolt out, pull the old ones out, and put the new ones in. pretty strait forward.

I'd bet that if your shifter is really sloppy, there is nothing left of the original bushings.

You need to be more specific about the dust plate... does it wiggle at all?

As memory serves, there are the four bolts at the corners, and you have to undo the nut that holds the shifter to the cross-member on the mounting plate (perhaps you're forgetting this), then the entire thing should come up.

hey quick question of related matter. umm i have the hold down plate with the 4 bolts off and all the dust covers out. there is one stud just behind the shifter, what does that bolt threw or too? when i was investigating my sloppy shifter i found that stud connected to nothing,, someone took a small peice of board drilled a hole in it pulled the stud up threw it and tossed a bolt on it. it works but not well. im wondering what its supposed to bolt to.

It braces the shifter itself to the mounting plate... Without that there, the shifter can wiggle all over the place without ever changing the gears (I had one tear on me before mid-shift... that part is rubber).

o shista. so lemme make shure im getting this right the metal hold down bracket with four bolts should have more than just a large oblong hole in it? like a rubber bushing to bolt that stud just behind the shifter threw. no wood blocks? lol,, i need another hold down bracket that still has the rubber in it dont I.

thanks sorry for the tread jack

Yes, you need a new bracket. Former owner ghetto rigged it. (When mine broke, I used a strip of aluminum until I got a new one... wood is just ghetto. lol)

It should look like this:

"holder bracket"
