k i dont know alot about cars i'm really starting to learn and i've always wanted a 300zx not the car to start with so i've heard but never the less its what i got so if you guys could answer a few of these questions for me i would greatly appreciate it

I have a 1990 300ZX twin turbo t-tops already have a cool air intake dual exhaust all the way to the manifold short shifter boost gauges water temp gauge intercooler piping and thats about it

However my turbos are going out the seals are cracked and the burning a small amount of oil i know this is a serious problem but just how serious? i have to drive it about 600 miles to get my other car what would happen if my turbos did blow out? destroy the engine completely? slight damage?

Next ? would be how much would it cost to rebuild the motor i already have it has 123k miles on it seems like everythings ok had it looked at compression test done or how much would it cost to replace it outright?

also anything i should check out on the car that people like myself wouldnt know to check on a import car like this?

turbos blow car runs like shit pay money to fix, lots.... shouldnt be engine damage

engine rebuilds are all relative to what is done no one can answer that question. but if you do all the work except the machining it might be 400 dollars, but if you have them do it all get upgrades blah blah blah it can be 6k

if theres nothing wrong with the car i doubt theres anything that needs to be checked other than watch for rust and you can try running the ECU codes see if theres any hidden faults bu the check engine light shold come on if im not mistaken

also getting 2 turbos rebuilt isnt bad probably 3-400 dollars collectively. the problem is getting the turbo's out

this doesn't make sense. did you check the compression or not? how was it? if the compession and oil pressure are both fine, you don't need to worry about a rebuild unless you plan on major upgrades. that block should be good for AT LEAST 200,000 if it's taken care of at all.

as for the turbos going out, snw disagrees, but is it not heard of that shards coming from the damaged turbos will go into the engine? i thought i'd heard of it before, but i'm no turbo expert.

if you shatter the turbo maybe but thats why most companies doent use ceramics lol. when the oil seals go it starts to smoke and eventually leads to failure usually the bearings wear and it starts to walk and wear on the walls and it just doesnt spool anymore. i suppose its POSSIBLE but i've never seen it happen

seen it happen on ebay turbos :) but the turbos will seize up

yeah so the moral of the story is don't go on a 600 mile drive.

im sure he will be fine driving it for a short time. its just bad seals.

rebuilt turbos are not the greatest idea. but if youre on a tight budget....

I beg to differ. The first time I ever replaced an engine was because I drove on blown turbos. My case isn't common, but it is possible... blown turbos -> metal shavings -> clogged oil passages + destroyed oil pump -> seized driver's side exhaust cam -> snapped timing belt + interference engine -> done.

Yeah, but nobody really recommends rebuilt turbos. Sport 500's or brand new cartridges are a far more reliable option, considering how many people rebuild turbos only to have them fail shortly after. If it wasn't a huge ordeal to replace turbos, it'd be worth the shot... but considering it's an evasive procedure to remove the turbos, I recommend getting the newest possible turbos.

lol never said i thought it was recommended either, just answering the question. if i was going through the hassle to replace the turbos on a Z32 im doing it once and for all so im doing it right... upgrade

I know its not a good idea but i just got back from Iraq and this is the only car i have at the moment my other one is in kansas which is 600 miles from here i was told if i dont accelerate fast it'll save the turbos so i plan on doing that

As far as upgrading yeah i'm just gonna let it sit at my place in kansas until i have the cash which should be in a few months and just have them replaced with the best thing i can find....any suggestions?

THe VG30DETT is kinda a pricey engine to play around with.
This kit looks to be pretty solid. I am sure some searches could bring up more answers. Either here or on hybridz.org.

ugh... this aint a classic Z ratfink. Z1 and JWT are good places to hit up and TT.net for info and classifieds i wouldnt go to any other forum for info on a Z32

Hybridz is a site I know with more info on the VG30DETT.

they are smart over there and some are good with that motor but usually not in the Z32 itself in a swap. but a select few, they tend to stick straight motors in or V8's not many V6 swaps

solid for what? someone who wants to spend 3 times over the price of say Z1s "new" stock turbos?

Yeah, that kit is a damn joke (GT2530's were only $3650 and will do 600rwhp... Sport 500's will make that power at only $2000). They don't even say what they are.

But I'd also never really trust any repairs that Z1 does, like putting 'new' cartridges in stock turbos... there was a big fiasco a while back about them selling someone what they said was their Sport 500 equivalent when really they just sent him a pair of stock turbos (both use stock housings and both are made in-house, I believe). I avoid Z1.

zlover if you avoid z1 then where do you do must of your z car shopping i would really like your store preference list. pm it to me if your want

I said look. Not is. I also said to ask around in places like Hybridz that seems to have a better wealth of knowledge with Z32's.
I would probably never buy a kit for any vehicle.
I would rather go through the boost maps and find something that I know will fit what I need.
