power steering removal

Ok, I don't have the money for the power steering hard hoses which have the crimp on it (you know the one I'm talking about). It's a ridiculously expensive part. Basically, I'm leaking power steering fluid from it onto my alternator, which has shorted it out for the second time. I'm poor right now (not a good combo with a modded TT, but it wasn't planned). Can I just take off my power steering belt if my power steering is already not working all that great and I'm tired of replacing alternators? Will it mess up anything other than the power steering?

it will only mess up your power steering.. but these are power steering racks so i dont know if its gonna cause damage in the long run but i do know your car is gonna handle like shit.... theres no way to just do a cheap fix on the hose? like cut out the piece and clamp on a rubber hose in between temporarily?? try to be resourcful before jsut taking off your belt.... btw it will still leak with out the belt so drain the fluid i guess to if you go that way

Z1 sells remanufactured power steering hoses for a reasonable price. I think the two high pressure hoses run about $75 each. You should look into that. I replaced one of mine with one of their remans and it works fine.

cool, thanks 91, from courtesy, they're ridiculous! I didn't know about the Z1 alternative.

I was in the same boat. I had one leaking a little, but knew it was just going to get worse. I can't believe how expensive the factory ones are. It is ridiculous.

I disagree. I removed the p/s and HICAS from my car and the handling, i feel, increased because you could feel the car better. the only thing that sucked was parking, but you all are in the US so even that wouldnt be a problem. I just capped the metal lines and removed everything else. again i saw no decrease in integrity and increase in handling. You can rebuild the p/s unit it's reather simple. i suggest ordering the hose from a junk yard...they dont deteriorate rapidly.

hmm... thats opinion i guess... usually when you take off the p/s from a power steering rack. things become much more difficult. its not made to be used with out the p/s unit

my z31 was absolutely great with no power steering, if you have enough arm strength to turn the car at a dead stop, but i dont see any problem with removing the power steering belt and running it, unless your car uses a steering box i dont think there would be any problems..

napoleonzheking 02-05-2007 12:51 AM

drove a z32 for 3 days with no power steering, anyone who said they removed it and the handeling got better lies and is full of crap... no it's not a matter of personal opinion....

if YOU have to drive without power steering fluid...remove the belt so you don't mess your power steering up running it dry....

I agree with napoleon. I remember driving my dad's '74 911 when I was younger,...a car that weighs about 2600 lbs and only had 215's on the front. I can't imagine what it would be like driving this car that weighs approx 3200 lbs and has 255's on it. Definitely not an improvement.

That's what you were trying to say???? Wow....just wow. I stopped reading after you said 'steering racks'. I just figured this was just another topic where you didn't know your ass from a hole in the ground. :wasted:

snwbrderphat540 02-05-2007 08:07 PM

hmmm... ill take that as a compliment and not what you truly believe... 100%

its only like in my second sentance and i am the first to post

EDIT: i challenge you to find a post where i didnt know my ass from a hole in the ground.... i challenge you sir!

and random convo doesnt count.

I know removing the power steering belt is a bad idea in the long run if you ever plan on using it again because when all the fluid leaks out your rack and pinion will run dry causing the pressure seals to deteriorate fast so when you finally replace the belt, hose, and refill the fluid your rack will most likely leak.

i believe what he is trying to say is you post a lot of random stuff thats not needed, or you post without thinking. you sometimes start on topic, and then just ramble off somewhere, creating long paragraphs, which honestly i hate reading at times.

fluid will leak out anyways with out any hoses or anything... so you SHOULD remove the belt so that you don't burn up your power steering pump running it dry....

That's pretty close. He says it more politely than I do. Some of your ramblings are obnoxious.

snwbrderphat540 02-07-2007 09:08 PM

i know... i try to keep it in the s130 or off topic section... but then it turns to habit with those guys and i bring it here.... and i dont usually create to long of paragraphs. i dont liek typing alot if i dont have to. but i understand what you mean.
