Newb w/ problems
Newb w/ problems
So I just bought my first Z today. '93 Z32/ na 5 speed. 120k on the motor. I have extreme buyers remorse because I know I paid more than what the car was worth and 5 hours after actual having the car I'm starting to get problems.
I'm sure you all hate getting the same newb questions but my problems start with a simple fill up at the pump.
I used premium gas; after I started the car back up the exhaust sounded much different (its aftermarket). Drove a round a little not thinking to much of it, and kept getting a slight smell of gas (that I blamed on the aftermarket exhaust).
I went to one of my later classes and when I was driving home it got a little jerky. While accelerating in 2,3,and 4th it jerks forward. Seeming like a misfire but I'm no mechanic.
I know the car doesn't have the OBD II, but will I still get a "check engine" when I have problems?
General info; The car ran fine before the fill up and was just above "E". To my knowledge the car has not been sitting, but who knows. Could it be a build up of old gas?
Also, I figured that a fuel cleaner wasn't a bad idea, so I went ahead and added seafoam to the tank. I've never had a problem with seafoam, plus the issue with the sputtering start immediately after I added the seafoam...not even enough time for the seafoam to circulate.
Anything helps.
Thanks.

I think these are fine Cars.. and have no Buyers remorse from purchasing them.. ( Or actually Buying them for Family .. not my Name on the Pink )..
I still love them..
120 is fairly Young for a 20 year old car.. but having a 20 year old car owned by a 'Non mechanic'. is not a good Idea.. unless your Rich..
Jerks and leaps are USUALLY normal tune up things.. BUT could be Loose Injector Electrical Plugs.. Loose /Bad Coil Packs.. Water in the Spark Plug Holes..
Lots of 'Could bee's'.. need to have it checked..
As long as it does not Smoke out the Tailpipe or Knock.. your doing good..
Might have to take it to be looked at.. Simple stuff first..
ANYBODY on your family tree work on cars?..
Cap

Well I actually bought it from a shop, but he was simply selling it there for the owner. I would assume (because he said he drove it every now and then) that the shop owner would have noticed something like this. However, not all shop worker/owner are trustworthy either.
I can do some engine/mechanic work. I'm just not the best diagnostician.
I do have a trusted mechanic though.

Yeah start off by check your spark plugs and make sure that you coil and fuel injectors connectors are clean of corrosion. If that checks out fine then move on to testing the coils for leaks and checking the ohms on the fuel injectors.
One more time inspect the EFI harness for any obvious breakage or what not. Take it from here and see where it gets you...
120K is very little for a Z32 at this time.. I bought mine at 140K and it was running pretty good for a while. But these car do require a lot of work to keep running at its best.
Good luck and let us know what you find.

i have similar problems but i wouldnt really say that they are problems, ALL 20 year old cars from my experience smell like gasoline and oil when they run, and as for the sputtering my z sputters when it is cold, but once it is at operating temp its just fine
