New Turbos running 20PSI - HELP?!
 

Hello all,

So here is what has been done to my car...

It has an AshSpec C tune ECU with Boost jets to increase the boost, the standard set that Ash provides. Megan Downpipes with new O2 Sensors (1 year old), Tenzo mufflers, Cold Air intake with K/N Filter, 99 J-Spec Front Fascia with smoked corner lights, 99 J-Spec taillights, ADR Sterlings (18x8.5 F with 245-18/ 18x9.5 R with 275-18 both F/R Kumho Escta SPT), HKS Automatic Line Controller, A pillar dual-pod with Autometer Boost and Voltage gauges, brand new NGK set of PFR6B-11B (installed in late July), brand new alternator 3 months old. The 120K service was done at 118K by the previous owner.

I just bought the car about a year ago and now it has 150k miles on it. I just replaced the timing belt (as a precaution) water pump, cam seals, pulleys. I also just recently replaced the turbos. So now my car is spiking at about 20psi!!

I am not complaining but I am concerned maybe my engine might detonate? I've had a couple of vac hoses pop off recently from letting my foot off the gas after a 20psi spike. BTW - :icon_super:

So my question is...Should i get 3 inch downpiping? im running 2.5? I have a manual boost control...that i feel I should hook up ASAP and turn my boost back down to about 14.5? Should I get blow off valves? Or should I sell the car cause im liable to either blow it up or crash it cause i dont know wtf to do? Any advice is welcomed.

So you replaced the stock turbos with new stock turbos?
Do you have an A/F ratio gauge? The A/F ratio will tell you if it's running rich or lean at 20psi. I personally don't know details about how much boost a VG30DETT can handle, but from a quick Google search, most people are saying ~17-18psi max.

This is also my personal opinion from experience... I HATE manual boost controllers. They are cumbersome, not precise, and asking for overboost problems. An electronic boost controller (EBC) is very precise and adjustable on the fly. EBC's allow you to change boost levels at any given time (normal driving vs racing). Pretty hard to hop out of the car, pop the hood, crank the MBC and hop back in, on the freeway. :D

Selling the car? Am I to assume you will inform the new owner of the problem or are we just passing along problems on the DL?

+1 Nismopick, get an electric boost controller ASAP!!

Thanks for the advice Nismo...and you make a great point about being able to adjust my boost on the fly! I Did install my manual boost controller for now so I have it "under control". I've recently learned that the best way to run that amount of boost safely is to upgrade my intercoolers (Side mount is what im looking at) and injectors and now I have the A/F gauge ordered up. I think ill order the electronic controller too...there goes another 2k. LOL

Seattle - I was kinda joking about selling the car but if you would like to make an offer be my guest...since you know the "problem". But to answer your question I wasn't trying to keep it on the DL im hunting for a way to solve a potential problem. Sorry if someone sold you a f'ed up car tho bro..im sure its happened to us all.
