Newbie with a problem...Whats new? Lol

Whats up guys? I just bought a 91 Z32 TT about a month ago for about $1000. Only problem of course, is that it doesn't run. The guy I bought it from was pretty old and just wanted to get rid of it, so I gladly took it off his hands. What he told me was that none of the pistons had compression. I found that really odd because the car only has about 70,000 miles or so. He also told me he knew very little about cars so its kinda hard to trust his opinion. when I start the car it makes a weird whirring type of sound like if the starter is not fully engaged or something. It sounds exactly like this youtube clip of a Z with the same problem.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=96gAkKLjPZE

A couple of days ago I took the starter to the auto parts store and had them test it, but the guy said it was good. So, would a good starter still not function properly when in place?
Any help would be appreciated.

BTW, whats wrong with the search tool on the site? Its not searching at all.

Is the motor turning over when you hit the starter? is it the correct starter? have you verified the starter solenoid is pushing the gear out?

The motor is not turning over. It is the correct starter because its the stock one, and no I haven't verified. How would I check the soleniod?

Quick update,
I changed the starter and still the same problem. Fuel pump is ok, and the ECU is reading no codes. Also the motor is in time. I'm stumped!

Wish I could answer your question about how to do this though. Must be somewhere out there though.

So it is as if the starter isn't hitting the ring gear on the flywheel?

So is the solenoid part of the starter assembly?

I had this happen to one of my Zs and there was a few teeth missing on the fly wheel. (from hitting the starter when the car was running) Put the car in gear and push it just enough to get the fly wheel to move a few inches. Then try to start the car.

Try this, or since you're already switching starters out (No idea how easy it is on this car, not really familiar with it) Look inside and see what the flywheel looks like. (Again if that's possible with this car haha. )

I took a look at the flywheel from under the car when i changed it. It looked fine. its working fine, but the car just doesn't want to crank all I get is a whirring sound. I see the cam gear spin inside so it can't be the starter. Its got to be something else. I'll try to post a vid soon so y'all can see. Easier than trying to explain lol.

I think the bigger mystery is what happened to your timing covers and what that mystery sound is when you are cranking it over.

No starts are easy, you need fuel, air, spark and compression. Check back when you have checked them, if you need help with it, the FSM can help you.

Just checked and no spark. Also, gas is brown/orange with a weird smell. Checked with Nissan and they never did the PTU recall on this car. I couldn't check compression since the car doesn't crank. Just has that weird turning sound.

In the video all your belts are moving. Doesn't that mean your engine is in fact turning over? And you just said that there's no spark, so I think there's something to look into...
Also, if you've been cranking it all this time and the fuel's been injecting into the cylinders, they could be flooded with fuel which would also be adding to you problem. If your fuel isn't moving, then you're in luck on that but then you have another separate issue to deal with.

I've searched for the answer to this, but no luck.

How do I know if my engine is flooded with gas?
I know I can pull the fuel pump fuse and crank it to unflood.

Well if you pull a spark plug and see gas pooled up in the cylinder, I would consider that to be pretty well flooded. Did you get it to spark yet?

Yea! I got a new ptu and now they spark. Now I need a new set of injectors since they all have a reading of 00.01. I think this problem is solved.
