just got a 300zx

Hey guys, I've recently inherited a 1988 300zx. I'm pretty much a newbie to the whole car scene and I'm really excited about learning some new stuff. She runs fine but I am hoping someone can point me in a good direction as to what I should do with her now.

Thanks

i dont know the condition of your new car but.... i would pick a area to start in and go from there. you can address the engine bay, interior, body, suspention, i always address the engine first clean it up and replace the crustie items. then get into the interior replace worn items. but nevertheless enjoy!!!

Agree with madigity. Download your Factory Service Manual at XenonZ31 Reference if you don't already have it.

Run the ECU-based diagnostic (it's under Section EF&EC for '86, no idea where for '88 - but you can find it.) Check the problem codes you will get from your ECU and that will aim you at the stuff you should fix first. When your ECU finally produces the 'I see no problems, Dave, all systems are normal and performing as expected..' code, you are ready to work on whatever you want.

Please check back if you have any questions while you get familiar with that great Z!

service history

If it is a family owned car, then hopefully someone has the receipts and service history of the car. Every 60k to 80k the timing belt should be changed( this is an interference engine, if the belt breaks parts will hit each other, like pistons and valves, and serious damage will happen ), especially if the car has been sitting for any extended period of time, the belt will have flat and rounded spots ). Since it a bit of an involved process, it is best to change a few other parts when you do this, there are kits which will contain everything you need. You will also change the water pump and tension-er. If you don't know the history of the car, change the belt now for peace of mind.

Here is a link to courtesy nissan list of kits
