I'm doing it
Yes I'm doing it, you guys will prolly hate me for it but im doing it anyway! xD I got an HKS Carbon Ti Muffler courtesy of my best friend. the Turbo 170mm shell with the 80mm inlet. Hm, and I work doing Tig work as well. I'm Fabbing up a sinlge exit, 3" exhaust for my car, test pipe back of course, 2.5" SS test pipes going into a 3" SS Cat back. it'll prolly look a little stupid at first because of the other hole, but I will also be fabbing up exhaust guards (So i don't burn the paint on one side, and a cover for the other side) also going to order the Ashspec 13" big brake kit. I was really looking into the Z33 Brembo. but Price/ benefit ratio is way too great. also thinking about a Rear Diffuser to make it look even hotter.
3" single exhaust isn't enough for the Z32. There have been gains shown with going from 2.5" dual to 3" dual, so to think a 3" single will flow enough is almost ridiculous. (No offense.)
A single round 3" exhaust is about 7 square inches, a dual round 2.5" exhaust is 9.81 square inches... so you're losing almost 3" in exhaust by going 3" single over 2.5" dual. In fact, the stock 2.25" dual exhaust is more than 7 square inches (about 7.95), so your single 3" would be more restrictive than stock.
To match the flow of a dual 2.5" exhaust, you'll need at least 3.534" diameter piping.
I have no problem with the exhaust style though... whatever increases performance is fine by me.

Also, the Z33 and new GTR run into a single pipe and split at the end if I remember correctly.
Edit, 3" Mine's Exhaust for the new GTR

Each 90degree bend is the equivalent of 15 feet of piping in terms of restriction. They do it to fit a muffler on cars (cheaper to make 1 muffler and do that). It is not the best for performance in any respect (being single or bent like that).
And I believe there were unrelated factors to the other cars issues with a large diameter exhaust... as I said, you are going to lose flow and that will reduce performance.
